What is the 'final word' on these plastic covers over notebook screens now a days?

I asked this in the HP forum (since I have a CTO order in progress) but really didn't get any solid replies. Are most pc vendors moving to this type of screen? For example HP's "infinity display"...they say it's glass that covers the screen from edge to edge but it's not glass...it's plastic...plastic that BENDS if you touch it lol!

I see Apple is also doing the same thing but I don't have personal hands on experience with them so I can't say if they are really glass or plastic...my gut tells me it's plastic as well but correct me if I'm wrong.

Anyways my reasons for asking about this is I'm concerned about the quality of the screens BEHIND the plastic/glass covering.

1.) Do I need to worry about fingerprints/smears/smudges on the LCD/LED screen itself before it was covered with the plastic/glass?

2.) Do I need to worry about dust/debree somehow getting inside the casing (between the LCD/LED and the plastic/glass covering) while I own the system? I ask because I've heard some people complain that this has ended up happening with their systems and when they called HP up about it for warranty service, HP insisted that they caused the problem! I'm so sure...we all are somehow opening up our screens to put dust in them just so we can call up HP and complain?

I'm just nervous about my purchase and I'm hoping for some reassurnace here that my system will be fine.

Thanks!

The bulk of LCD screens have a tough plastic screen.. The more expensive ones use glass.... It does the job, and now you can get decent screen cleaners that don't smear or affect the screen.. The whole screen is well sealed in, so unless a liquid is spilt on it, debris won't get into it.. I hate LCD screens getting fingermarks on them and clean all mine to keep dust off.. The kids get told off for touching the 42"LCD screen, the cleaner I use for laptop and PC screens works fine on that too... Apart from physical damage like dropping it, you should have no worries with a new modern screen...

So Apple uses real glass then I would assume since their notebooks are double the price of pc notebooks?

Monster Cable has an "HP" section on their home page for accessories, etc (with HP's name on it as well as Monsters.) I went ahead and bought the notebook screen cleaner that has both HP's and Monster's name on it and it comes with microfiber clothes. I assume that will be fine for the cover since it's for "HP." I can't imagine they would be pushing HP products on their site (marketing gimmick I know) for notebooks that for the most part have the coverings on them if it would ruin the cover.

you don't need a special cleaner for screens. water and a little isopropyl alcohol will work just fine, as long as you're using the microfiber cloths.

Glass infront of a laptop screen !? Where did you see that ever!!?

Plastic isn't new at all - just the opposite! It has always been plastic - some use thinner, some thicker!

I can't imagine glass in a laptop:

1. Easily breakable especially with such a thickness (if the laptop falls for example) or even from a small screen bending that could happen.
2. Heavy
3. Unflexible
4. Glossier then any plastic
5. Needs to be perfectly manufactured not to distort the image
6. Because of all above - expensive

P.s. To clean I have always used either a standart moist cosmetic tissue or window cleaning liquid and dry paper tissue! Never had a scratch !!! Come on - don't trust those adverts trying to sell you a 100ml of a "very special cleaning detergent for just 9,99"
The only time I made a scratch on my LCD was when I decided to vacuum clean (!) the keyboard and hit the screen with the inlet of the vacuum cleaner (don't laugh!)
