Blu-Ray drive for P-7811FX

I am looking to replace the existing DVD drive with a combo BD-ROM/DVD burner. As the present drive is a SATA drive, I've been told the HL-CT10N will work. Has anyone replaced their drive in this laptop with a Blu-Ray and if so, which one did you use? Did it work ok? Any comments would be appreciated. I'm debating whether to replace the existing drive or use an external such as the excellent Plextor PX-B310U. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...lu-ray%20drive

Did you have a chance looking at the stickies on the P-68xx modification and upgrade? There are posts mentioning Blu-Ray upgrade/replacement.

Blu_ray drive for P-7811FX

Thanks. Yes, I read that post concerning installation of an older PATA interface BC-5500a drive. The SATA version, if I can find one is the 5500-S which should work. I think the HL-CT10N is a later drive. It does appear to be an easy upgrade, but I was just curious if anyone had done it in this particular laptop.

Got me here. Hopefully some members can confirm it for you. Is there a chance for you to try that drive out at a shop in person before buying it?

I doubt it because the only ones I've found are on eBay or from firms in China. Thanks again and maybe someone who has done the upgrade will spot this thread and confirm.

Good luck. And then again there is always the external solution mentioned in your OP to fall back on.

panasonic blu-ray

I put a panasonic in mine and it works fine. I had to swap the door bezel with the existing on off the laptop so it was flush with the chassis. Window 7 installed drivers and it works great. I got mine at geeks.com last summer. I am sure that any SATA blu-ray drive will work fine.

Would you happen to have some pics about the put-together? Especially with the bezel adjustment.

Was it this one, the UJ-220?

I installed a Panasonic UJ-120 Blu-ray BD-ROM/8x DVD±RW DL Notebook IDE Drive. I have no pics of the install. It was very easy though. The bezel for both drives is simply clipped on. You pry off the existing one and it will attach to the new drive perfectly. Then you will have a stealth blu-ray drive because the door on the existing one just says its a dvd unit.

Shop around for the drive. I see blu-ray drives for less than a hundred bucks at several stores.

I will, but I'm a little confused. The Panadonic UJ-120 you said you installed is an IDE drive and the P-7811FX takes a SATA drive. Some Gateway laptops take an IDE drive, but not the P-7811FX.

You are correct, but the install is exactly the same as well as they drive bezel replacement.

Oh, ok. Thanks for the help.

Have had a CT10N in my 7811 for about +/- a year now. Mine works great. There were others that had problems because of the various CT10N firmwares..

Here's my guide.

Quote:
flip laptop over
remove rubber plug that hides mounting screw
remove screw
slide out slim drive
remove mounting bracket from back of old drive (2 screws) Try not to do a RangerXML and lose the screws (sorry Ranger could not resist)
mount bracket to new drive (2 screws)
remove faceplate from old drive (be careful tabs are delicate)
attach faceplate to new drive
insert new drive
install screw
install rubber plug
fire the lappy back up and it will install the drivers for the new drive

Thanks. I won a CT10N on eBay last night. Do you know by any chance the firmware number for the one you have? I guess I'll try it as is and if it doesn't work see if I can Google the right firmware for it. It's a refurbished Dell, but I'm pretty sure the CT10N's are all made by LG.

Of the firmwares that worked, there maybe others.
WA06
WA02
W181

YC07 was one that did not work without anydvd running in the background although Lightscribe was enabled with this firmware

Update! Received my HL-CT10N today. It was the easiest upgrade I've ever done. It fit the P-7811FX perfectly. All I had to do was switch the bezel, bracket and slide it in. Set the region in PowerDVD 9 and I'm enjoying a Blu-Ray now.
