ODMs developing frameless-screen notebooks, say Taiwan makers

Quote:
Taiwan's major ODM notebook makers have been cooperating with panel makers to develop slim models equipped with frameless screens which are expected to hit the market in second half of 2010, according to industry sources.

The Foxconn Group is cooperating with Chimei Innolux Corporation (CIC), the new entity to be formed by Chi Mei Optoelectronics (CMO), Innolux Display and TPO Displays, to develop frameless models to strengthen its competitiveness in the ODM notebook segment, the sources indicated.

Meanwhile, Compal Electronics is collaborating with Chunghwa Picture Tubes (CPT) to develop frameless screens, and is expected to start shipping frameless notebook models to its major clients, including Acer, in the second half of 2010, revealed the sources.

Quanta Computer is also on the same bandwagon and is cooperating with AU Optronics (AUO) on frameless screens, said the sources. AUO's frameless screens will be offered to major ODM clients such as Hewlett-Packard (HP) initially.

The new frameless screens will mainly be made using Corning's reinforced Gorilla glass, the sources indicated.

Wondering if there will be some sneaky previews during CeBit 2010. And where would the webcam be in this frameless environment?
