USB? Bluetooth Internal Card on old Dell Inspiron's (i9300 etc) question

Does anyone know if the internal Bluetooth card that slots into the underneath compartment on old Dell Inspiron's (like the i9300) uses a USB connection?

What I mean by that is, if I were to chop the plug off the end of the connector cable and replace it with a female usb socket, would I be able to run any USB device off it? I need an extra usb socket for a pretty extreme casemod I'm doing at the moment and it ideally (definitely!) needs to be on the underside of the laptop.

Thoughts?

Looks like that card's power can also be fed from the pcmcia bus, in that case it won't work as you intended.

Maybe Dave can chip in here.

I am not sure the BT connection your talking about is a USB one.

From what I recall it shows up as a seperate device in control panel.

One test I can think of is to disable all the USB devices in your control panel and see if the BT goes away.

Thanks - so I wonder what connection it uses? perhaps it's basically just a motherboard device?

I'll try disabling all the usb stuff in device manager later...

does anyone know if it's possible to pull a usb line directly off the motherboard somehow? i'm a dab hand with a soldering iron - just need to know where to solder!

Without a schematic, everything would be just guessing and measuring the signals. My guess is that you probably can pull out some USB signals in the PCMCIA connecting area.

I would also suggest try using a USB Hub instead if it is just a case of neeing additoinal USB ports

yeah that would be the plan...

thing is, I want to attach the usb hub to the back of the laptop so that I've got no cables protruding from the side (apart from the power cable).

Have you looked into some no-fan notebook cooler with integrated USB hub?

cheers ...

I'm using wifi for connectivity - I'm trying to minimise the number of cables hanging out the side of the laptop.

it's not data transfer that's the problem - it's connecting other usb devices to my laptop without them being visible.

I assume the USB hub would need to connect to one of the usb ports on the side of the laptop? Again, not ideal - I want to try and connect a USB hub to a USB connector on the underside of the laptop.

Guess I'll have a look at the PCMCIA connector...
