My 9750 died - it appeared to be video card related. When I opened the compartment to see if it needed reseated, it was completely loose. It appears that the posts that hold the screws from the heat sink to the motherboard have completely separated from the motherboard. I'm not looking to repair it, but I want to put the HD in an external enclosure.
Therein lies the problem - the drive is supposedly a SATA drive (according to BIOS post and the drive label itself), but it has a 40pin IDE connector and a ribbon cable attaching it to the motherboard. I can only assume that early SATA drives might have been built using existing IDE drive housings for cost reasons before the SATA connector standard was finalized. I'm afraid to try an IDE external enclosure for fear it will just fry the drive - I doubt there's an internal IDE-SATA adapter, and there's certainly not one attached to the drive.
I've had an enclosure for this drive in the past (I had to send the laptop in for repair about 9 months after I first bought it and needed to retrieve some work related files for use while it was gone), and I had an enclosure by Vantec that worked - SATA enclosure with 40pin header. They don't seem to exist anymore, and I can't find the enclosure I purchased either (I've moved since then and it got lost in the shuffle). Anybody else know where I might get an enclosure for this drive?
