Alienware Area-51 m15x Mod project underway

post #1 of 17

I was looking at the current m15x and I must say I felt that they were too big. I currently have a m1730 Dell and I'll be moving to a m17x shortly, just waiting for the right spec'ed m17x to come my way with an i7 (I live 3 miles from a Dell/Alienware Ebay Resller who goes to auctions and mass buys them)

But anyways I've decided to take the path of acquiring a first gen m15x with a good GPU heatsink and mod in either a 260m, 280m, or maybe even a 285m. I can either go to my resller for the GPU's or even to http://rjtech.com/shop/index.php?dis...ategory_id=167 to get the card I want. But I was able to get this less then half year old PC for a great price $800 so far, and it should be here within the week. This is going to be really funny if I get all of this to work out. SO here are the specs.. I feel the portability of the first gen 15x to be alot higher then the later generations. And I have until this September until the warranty is out, but I should have a nice rig here for a sub-par price.

OK so for anyone whose upgrading like I am be sure you realize that you have to use MXM 2.1 I didn't realize that until recently after doing more reading and this means that I can't go with a 285m as that's only a type 3 card. So should I go with a 280 or a FX 1600 ???

FX1600 = 8700M GT, forget it. (1600 owner)

Ok thank you, that means that I'm most definitely going with a 280, I'll just have to custom create a heatsink or something to better distribute the heat.

Cool. A system modding. Don't forget the pics.

How about taping the area with some aluminum tape to conduct/guide the heat flow?

cheers ...

Just purchased the Sheets, but we're going for this kind of a look,

Nothing too crazy, lol. And then of course the Normal heat sink on top of that with another layer of Thermal Compound. Yes I have the Diamond stuff you recommended but I'm at a crossroads on if I should use it or not. Basically I'm told it's ALOT harder to apply then AS5, and that AS5 tests are inconclusive because it's stated in the manual that AS5 has a "Broken-In Period" of 200+ hours and then you'll begin to see the gain. So.... yeah..... Pics of the laptop overall will be up in 24 hours.
