Not yet. I have one in my Asus G73 but it's physically too big for the M17x.

Sure, the red is the 4870 and the green is the 5870 sitting underneath it.

So either Dell has one custom made, or were looking at a R3 to be able to support it

Looks like

But boards can be redesigned and sometimes save a bit of space. And it's entirely probable that the industry is building individual board sizes for notebooks to keep the boards from "migrating" to different machines.

Might as well giving it another model number, using version control number in this case can be very confusing.

That is a big and beefy card... nice.

Some people are saying that the 5870 in the Asus is still proprietary so we shall see.

I would think probably so

Totally agreed. ASUS is known for making its own version of graphic card straying away from the original reference (ATI).

cheers ...

Agreed, but reference? I think that is a joke. In so far as Asus does make high end GPU's?
I don't have a a lot Asus background knowledge but from what I understand the W90 used a reverse MXM slot. Plus it was the only 4870 with 512MB GDDR3.

On an unrelated note I asked Dell to cancel my replacement and I'm going to return my existing system. Now that we are getting close to March many people believe dual 5870s are just around the corner so I shall wait. I have the G73 to keep me busy.

This is only to confirm with Dave that ASUS would tweak ATI to make it proprietary, just like Saphire would have its own version of the ATI Radeon.

ATI really only supplies Chips (GPU's) and a base design and most manufacters take it from there.

Even if they keep the same form factor, the VBIOS is usually different and would not be reconized in a different laptop.

Desktops are a different animal - they all have to be complatible. laptops Not so much.

It would be cool if there was an industry wide standard where you could swap cards from one laptop to the next but I feel certain enough to know that will never happen. Take into consideration, build design, power reqs, etc etc it would be a headache

had you any benchmark, if you can see the FPS, (max, min, average) with resolution and settings. (crysis, CSS, and other gamesor 3d mark vantage).

in 3d mark 06 you see only points.

thx
