Problems When Upgrading to windows 7 64-bit Area 51 m15x

Thread Starter
I bought this laptop from someone on craigslist for around $500, He told me there wans't any issues. But when I got home I noticed the keyboard didnt work. So i googled it and it seems as if i had to install the operating system inthe correct order.

So i installed windows 7 64 bit following dhoang format and dells format.

http://4help.alienware.com/cgi-bin/a...i=&p_topview=1

here are the problems.

When I did hoangs keyboard patch for the command center and restarted i opened command center and the keyboard was NOW an option to change colors but the keyboard still didnt work ? I changed it to every color but the keyboard just did not work but the option was there !

Also, I cannot find the freaggin' driver for my intergrated webcam. I installed dhoangs driver and most of every webcam driver on these forums and still everytime i open cyberlink it says exactly

"No video device detected. Please plug a video device into your computer."

When I look into device manager under Imaging devices it says i have a facap, Fast access video capture. is that ? is that the webcam tat doesnt freggin' work ?

Im getting pretty pissed. Everything else works correctly though after the install.

I have updated the command center but still problem...

Someplease help. Is it a hardware problem ?

. Have you asked your buddy over the other forum as what the problem can be? He was the one that offers the patch, he should be able to tell you what went wrong.

. Have you searched also this forum about the keyboard lighting issue?

I am closing your other thread - no need for duplicating post and threads.

cheers ...

Try using the Vista Drivers if there are no Win 7 ones

You may have to manually install the drivers as well

I'm going with vista, until this gets better resolved, if it even gets resolved. I'm quite content with Vista, it isn't that bad.

Interesting since you are not the only that goes back to Vista, even though many users do have luck with installing and running W7.

Maybe we should make a list of what/why this model is not performing well with W7.

My m5500 didn't like Win 7 either. But then again, it wasn't that fond of Vista as well. I wound up converting it to Linux Mint and it's working amazingly well, which is perfect for deploying to the desert.

I use Vista at work, so it's not really a bid deal to me. I've also been scared of Windows 7 ever since it destroyed by G1INtel SSD drive. If you people didn't already know Windows 7 will implement Trim on your SSD drive regardless if you are prepped for it or not. And in some cases, doing such will destroy your Drive. Luckily Intel RMA'ed my drive at no cost but it was still a hassle. I'm shopping atm for a SSD drive for my m15x.

Sorry that I can't help you with the more general problem, but I can tell you what "FaCap" is. As part of the Command Center, Alienware includes facial recognition software called AlienSense (also called FastAccess depending on where you look). Because of it's ability to continuously track your face even after login, AlienSense creates a "virtual camera" to which it publishes video after it's done with the facial analysis. This allows other video programs to use video normally even when AlienSense is also in use. Since it's not a hardware driver at all (and not really a source of video in it's own right like an real, physical camera would be), it's likely not related to your current struggles.

My only suggestion was going to be to make sure that you've upgraded to the Win7 compatible version of Command Center, but I see now at the bottom of your post that you've already upgraded. Sorry that I don't have any better additional ideas.

SO far so good.... Actually I don't mean to be pushy but someone should really Sticky the link I just posted, this is very good for m15x users in terms of upgrading to windows 7, and the link is direct with ALienware's website not so much a 3rd party or 3rd person.
