When will the m15x get a hardware update (graphics cards supporting DX11 for example)

I am planning on buying a new m15x, but I have heard many reviews that the current hardware is somewhat dated and there is much better stuff available.

Any idea when dell will refresh the customization options and put some new stuff in there? A new video card would be nice...

there are rumours that the new ATI 58xx series DX11 gpu will be out in March/April

As for NVIDIA not likely to see any mobile DX11 GPU until late 2010.

I would expect we will be seeing USB 3.0 shortly as well.

that sounds great.... USB 3.0 would be amazing... I will try and hold off on the purchase than. Hopefully, I won't have to wait too long

My take is that the new models will not come out until after summer and before school start. Manufacturers are still struggling to roll out the models they presented in CES.

cheers ...

Did you see any pretty new toys for future release @ CES for us to play with ghn?

For those who don't know a new Bio was released for the m15x (i7 version ONLY NOT AREA-51) to allow the m15x to have support for the 5870 which is a DX 11 Card, I'd assume the 4870 now works in there as well, but don't quote me on that one. But 5870 should work now.

As far as AW concern? No

The only future release that I am waiting for is a combi travel & game notebook. Read the Gigabyte thread in the News Section. In a nutshell it is a "netbook" for traveling with simple and good integrated GPU. At home you can convert it into a gaming machine with a powerful GPU inside the docking station.

cheers ...

so ghn, you still think the stock won't be refreshed till summer?

Or before school starts again in the Fall. Supply is still tight on notebook parts, plus the working arrangement between Intel, nVidia, ATI etc

cheers ...

It has been confirmed that the ATI 5870 works with the M15x with the latest bios and the cards sold for the Clevo systems. So technically you can get a M15x+5870 now.

But it runs like 15 degrees hotter then the standard 260 right? Lastly what type of gains are we expecting here and how much of a Need is DX 11 right now?
Yes the 5870s definitely run hotter but the 4870 is already a big leap from the 260M making the 5870 that much better. If I had to put a number on it I would say 30%-35% better performance. Of course your mileage may vary depending on the game.
Is there a chart comparing these? Im a bit out of date... don't want to assume higher number = better.
No charts but the pecking order based on benchmarks is...

3870 < 260M < 4850 < 280M < 285M < 4870 < 5870

So I don't think I am gonna be able to hold off getting the computer till the hardware update... what about a price drop though?

Anyone know when those are likely to happen?
Hard to rely on a price drop. Dell still sells the M1730 in the outlet for $2K+.

If you are in the US you can go through Dell EPP and get 10% off and if you sign up for their spam you'll get a stackable $50 off coupon.

edit: You can also make it different colors if you have the $$$

Would rather pocket the cash and pick up a 5870from Eurocom or whatever, but at the same time if you were to do both, it just gets a little to expensive especially considering how easy it would be to all of a sudden be hitting 3 grand.

Do like I did buy a m15x with a 240m for a deal (eBay, forum, outlet) or even new configured how you want it, then head over to notebookreview.com and grab a 5870 from baby hemi (brand new cards for a clevo/sager). Direct fit and no issues (heard some people getting duds on eBay from Eurocom just a warning).

My m15x runs great with it! Story from two or three people that have talked with some people at dell/alienware is that the m15x will not get a refresh with the 5870 (or any other DX11 card from what he they heard). Maybe a refresh or new chassis planned mid/late this year?

You did change out the heatsink right? Because I belive the heatsink between the 240 and the 260 are different from one another. Honestly though if I owned a m15x I would aim towards getting a 4870 ATI card. I say this because they'll be supported now and chances are you'll be able to pick one up REAL cheap in the upcoming days, and months. Everyone is going to be flooding towards the 5870. Now if you value DX 11 alot by all means go with a 5870, but if you just want some performance gains at a good price point I'd say go with a 4870.

Expect a new GPU option for the M15x next week when the 5870XF is released for the M17x.
