My M17X issue with app feezing

I have the M17X that I purchased less then a year ago, and it came with Vista 64 bit, which at later point I have bumped up to Windows 7 Pro 64 bit (clean install).

I started to have issue recently where pretty much any application while using it, will freeze up and it will take up to 3 min for that app to unfreeze. If I try to open Task Manager to see what is up, alot of times that will cause my whole system to freeze but the mouse still works and I have the hour glass spinning on the mouse, and I have to cold reboot the system.

This seemed to have started about 2 weeks ago or so (i dont use my laptop daily).
I think its either memory or the hdd but I wanted to reach out to you all and see if I am right or not.

Currently I am running the Diagnostic from the CD (the extended one), so I am hoping something will come out of it.

Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.
Thank you

I agree with your suspicions. Can you do memtest86? While frozen are there constant HDD hits?

Hi
thank you for your reply
I will run the memtest once the diag is completed.
As for hdd activity once frozen, well, little hard to tell, since the same light is for HDD and for power and charging, so that light is always pulsing.
I will reply with the diag results and the memtest results.

Thank you again

Try running under Safe Mode if the diagnostic turns out negative. And what about use a system restore point before this freezing issue started?

Well it may actually be that the memory is having an issue,
I have basically taken out 1 stick of memory out, ran the system for a while, and it did it again, now I am on the other stick, and it is working fine so far, and I have done things to it that would normally cause it to freeze up.

Now I just need to figure out which RAM to buy from Newegg since I want to bump it up to 8GB anyhow. Plus since the diagnostic software came out with everything good (after 6 hrs of running) I am sure Alienware will not just swap a memory because I am telling them that it is bad.

Good that it was a simple solution with getting another stick of ram. Good luck.

cheers ...
