Its been working fine. The guy just uses for emails mainly. He took the machine to Mexico [Mazatlan] and now he told his room mate to get ahold of me to let me know the motherboard is fried and the shop he took it to in Mexico cant find a replacement. The guy hasnt got ahold of me yet, but does anyone know if the power in Mexico could have pooched the motherboard? Humidity? Any other ideas? It kinds pisses me off the guy didnt call me fist, but I dont want to loose him as a friend either.

If you didn't give a warranty you should not feel so guilty. I understand your feelings but if you did not know how is it your responsibility?

Ebay has the Motherboards for one.

But there are many reasons it could have died, not of which could have been helped by you.

I can relate to these situations where the comp was fine and the minute it changes hands it dies! Hard to explain without being looked at as a fraudster hiding some defective issues.

Hope it works out with your friend.

cheers ...

Thanks for the replys guys. I am still waiting to hear from the guy. A person would think if it was so important he could just call me, rather than trust the situation to a Mexican computer repair shop.

I am cautious with local repair shops even here in the US. I think they do better with desktops. And I have always done my own repairs even having no experience. Repairs are going to be swapping out, No one professionally does micro welds/solders. I don't even think they bother replacing capacitors. If it tests bad it all goes.

Maybe your friend knows that is the risk of buying a used computer? Best of luck.

The other thing is the guy had lots of money to spend, I offered him my Toshiba with complete care warranty for 14 months and only wanted a bit more $ for it. In hindsight I wouldnt have sold him the laptop. I had to go over to his house before he left for Mexico as he bought a webcam and had some kid install it. Then the audio wouldnt work. I installed the latest drivers off the internet and the thing started working. He know practically nothing about puters so its possable the tech just wants the laptop for himself.

As far as you know he could have been the one who broke it, or the guy at the shop is just trying to screw him.

I would wait to hear from him, then offer to help him locate a new mobo if needed.

He can just as easily find one on Ebay himself and order it shipped to Mexico.

SO I got the laptop back and its full of pop. I suspect he spilled the pop and the computer kept working for a while. THen when it quit he must have thought it wasnt the pop. Anyways the mystery is solved. Thanks everyone for your help.
