the is less than 255 chars. it will copy files under 60kb but anything over get the error
post #4 of 15
Before copying, try moving the files as close to the HDD root as possible, depite the path being less than 255.

Thanks for the 255 character info, I did not know the exact magic number. All I remember is that I had the same error transferring files with directories that reached generations deep some time ago.

i tried putting the file in c:\mlh then moving or copying it to the pc over the lan and will work if under about 60kb anything over gets the error. tried running check disk and after it runs and is done on bootup BOSD with FS_REC.SYS error

Check this. I know your problem is not Delete, but it may be related. You may have a filename with a space in it, which "should" be OK, except when it isn't. That's why it quits after copying 60KB. See if you can figure where it quits and what it quits on.

renamed a 149 kb file to something like temp.exe and samething. it starts and then stops during tha copying or the move. also, tried move to a usb drive and get no issue it only happens it seems to be pc to pc over the LAN.

Try zipping up the whole directory and contents in it , then transfer as one large file.

but then the file would be over the 60kb issue. it will copy or move file as long
as is it under about 60kb

Size shouldn't matter (well, not here anyway). You ought to try the ZIP or even burn it on a CD and try. You have a permissions or policy or path length or space-name problem specific to your environment. Also surf the Knowledge Base at support.microsoft.com , or even Google.

try this:

go to your network connection > tcp/IP >
advanced > add in your WINS server IP

put wins in a did not work. the funny thing is it only happens on two of my pc. they cannot transfer file between the two but can transfer files to other pc on the network fine and have not changed anything on them. the two that are not work are the Alienware 51m2 and a fulltower that i built. i have done searchs on support.microsoft.com and google and have not came up with anything is why i thought about asking here since i read the forums here daily.

Let's work Permissions for awhile.
1. Are both PCs in the same Workgroup or Domain on your LAN? Right-click My Computer, click Properties, click Computer Name, click the Change button (but don't change anything) and verify each computer is in the same place.
2. Can the PCs ping each other? Go to a DOS window, enter IPCONFIG /ALL, get each PCs IP address, and issue a >Ping IP_Address to each other. If the computers are in the same Workgroup or Domain the IP adresses should be VERY similar.
3. Check that File and Printer Sharing is checked on both PCs (mainly the one you want to copy FROM). Go to Network Connections, right-click the Local Area Connection that is Enabled for your LAN ethernet connection, click Properties, be sure File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks is Checked.
4. On the PC that you want to copy FROM, go to the folder you want to copy FROM, right-click, click Sharing, share folder as some name, click Permissions, and set to EVERYBODY Full Control. This is TEMPORARY (actually, Read Only should be sufficient). Do not leave it at Full Control indefinitely unless you specifically need that.
5. On the PC that you want to copy TO, right-click My Network Places, click Map Network Drive, for Folder enter \\FROM_PC_name\Share_Name or enter \\IP_Address\Share_Name, such as \\192.164.0.101\Share_Name. Click Finish and if it asks for authentication enter FROM_PC_name\admin_name and admin password or IP_Address\admin_name and admin password, such as 192.164.0.101\administrator and password. NO double back slashes for authentication. Click Finish if asked.
6. The FROM folder should open in Explorer on the TO PC. Copy and paste.

Be positive! (A blood type?) We can do this.

both pc are on the same work group and can ping each other fine. file and printer sharing is on them both and have allow network users to change my files check. i am logged on with the same account on both and the account on both has admin rights botjh pcs and map to each other. it is just when copying or moving a file over about 60kb i get this error. also, if i disable the ethernet cards
and use a wireless connect between the two it will copy or move files over 60kb. also, works using a cross over cable connect the two pc together. i should have rebooted the router that seems to have to working again. i guess going about 6 months without it being rebooted is
too long
