Problem installing XP on Dell Studio 1558

Hello everyone,

I recently got a new Studio 1558 with Windows 7 preinstalled. I created a few partitions using Acronis Disk Director. Then I started installing XP. I first changed the SATA type to ATA from AHCI in the BIOS and then booted with the Win XP installation CD. The setup started loading the files but crashed with an ACPI.sys BSOD. I tried using F7, but the setup froze at "setup is starting windows". I tried using F5 and selecting standard-pc, but it again froze at the same point. BTW, I've used this Win XP disc before, and it's not scratched. Does anyone have any idea how to overcome this?

Thanks,
Anirudh

How about trying to slip-stream the SATA driver into an installation disk and go from there?

Hi ghn, I'll try doing that. But wouldn't changing the SATA type to ATA take care of the issue?

Supposedly. But I am not so sure with the new models nowadays.

It could be also that the BIOS has locked XP out altogether on this model, which in this case would make sense to run XP in virtual mode within W7 Ultimate.

I slipstreamed the SATA drivers into the installation disc, but I'm getting stuck at the same place.

Regarding the BIOS, it seems that Dell may indeed be trying to lock XP out. It doesn't have any power management option (for disabling ACPI). In fact, the BIOS looks very crippled.

But here's the thing, I found a user with the same laptop as me that managed to install XP by bypassing HAL using F7. So I assume I can do it too. I'm wondering whether I should delete Dell's hidden recovery partition before trying to install XP. The thing that's stopping me from doing it is that the other user managed to reach the 'select partition' screen during XP setup and delete the hidden partition from there. In my case, I cant even get past "setup is starting windows" screen. So I'm not sure nuking the partition will help me.

Your best bet would be, my opinion, is to get another drive and install XP on it. Save the original drive with the recovery partition just in case.

Yep, looks like the BIOS is incompatible with XP... They are screaming about this on the DELL forums and it don't look like DELL are going to support it either... (Seen this quite a few times, esp when XP first came out)...

EZ way but mysterious

hi

this is the way in short phrase:
1-Enable ATA mode in bios(instead of ACHI)
2-whenever XP-install-CD asked you to press F6 , instead of that you press F7
3-othger steps are as easy as installing XP is! ENJOY

well this worked on Dell-1558 for me

F7?

XP is pretty underwhelming at this point... I too vote for virtual mode.
