Acer Aspire 5517-5632

Thread Starter
I know Michelle plays around with Acer laptops quite a bit and understands their numbering system.
I purchased a 5517 from Staples up here in Canada past Boxing Day sale for $299 (el cheapo unit)
Acer 5517-5632 includes Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit, AMD Athlon 64 processor TF-20 (1.6ghz, 512kb L2 cache), 15.6" HD Acer CineCrystal LCD, ATI Radeon HD3200 graphics, 2gb memory, 160gb hard drive, DVD Super Multi DL drive, cardreader, wireless b/g.
Looked thru the laptop disassembly stickies above and couldnt find this model.
Is there another model that is very comparable.

What about the AS5532 model? It has the same specs as you mentioned.

Quote:
1. Remove the hard drive, memory, and the wireless network card.
2. Remove any screw you find at the bottom of laptop. You can now remove the DVD module, and it would also be a good idea to remove the LCD hinge covers (they pop out easily).
3. The next step is to remove the center strip (the strip where the power button is located). Open the LCD screen as far as it will go. Along the back edge of the center strip, at the recesses for the LCD screen hinges, you will notice there is a slight overhang. Using a small screwdriver, gently pry up on the overhang. The center strip, should begin to lift up. Once this happens, you can lift up the center strip along its length by hand and you should be able to remove the strip.
4. Remove the keyboard. There are no screws holding it in place and it should pop right out. Remove its ribbon cable from the motherboard.
5. Unplug the main connector for the LCD on the left. Next, pop all wires coming from the LCD out of their holders. You are now ready to remove the LCD. Remove the 4 screws holding the LCD in place. Once the screws are taken out lift the LCD out. You will be able to pull the wires through the hole and completely remove LCD.
6. On each side of laptop, there is a small two pin wire connector. The left side is black/white, the right side black/red. These are the speaker connectors. Unplug each connector.
7. Along the back edge of laptop, you will now see three recess that look like screw holes, but are the color of the laptop. These are screws, but each have an adhesive cover. Using a very small knife (an X-acto knife works best) gently pry off each cover and put off to the side to reuse. Remove these screws.
8. Now, under where the keyboard was , you should see 5 screws. Remove these screws. Once done, you should now be able to separate the two halves of the case.
9. The bottom half of the case contains the motherboard. There is one screw holding it in place, on the bottom right. Remove this screw. The motherboard can now be removed and the laptop is now completely disassembled.
Borrowing this from here.

I believe the 5517 is very close to my 5516 that I got in the US last July. I think the main difference is the graphics card (mine came with an un-upgradable Raedon x1200 and no webcam). Anyway, following the same instructions above from their original posting, I just yesterday upgraded the cpu to an AMD Turion 64 x2 TL-50 that I bought off ebay for $5.50. It was the first time I had ever opened up a laptop so I was pretty proud of myself. There is not a lot out there about either machine, but there are postings about upgrading the 5516. Good luck!

Any noticeable performance gain with the CPU upgrade? Congrats on your first tinkering

My machine does feel more responsive. I'm also going to reinstall windows to take full advantage. BTW, do you know anything about Acer's erecovery? I want to do a fresh install of windows 7 Ultimate (I have 7 on it now, I previously did the upgrade from vista). Since no discs came with the machine, I'm worried that by installing just the OS I won't have some program that will let me burn or watch DVD's etc. If I initially burned the erecovery DVD's, will I still be able to use them to access the hidden erecovery partition if I need to restore to factory settings, i.e., vista and all of the other garbage that came on the machine to get 1 or 2 useful programs? This could probably be another thread, but I figured I'd ask and get yelled at if need be. Acer tech support does not seem to understand my question. Thanks!

If you never touch your recovery partition, any recovery disks in conjunction with it will get you back to the original state regardless what current OS you are using.
