$1000 for an ASUS....Please pick one for me!

Howdy!
I've been looking at laptops for a while and just could not seem to press the trigger on my first choice (Sager).

However, I think my search is over with ASUS...and you can help me know this for sure. Thanks for reading the following and helping out, in advance.

Here is an unusual idea. I think a gaming laptop may work BEST for my small business ( I never played a video game online and most likely never will!)

However, I feel they design a lot of gaming models for heavy use, installing pads for wrists (something I can use since I'm always on), great graphics, easy on the eyes(watching Hulu at work ), quiet backlit keyboards (working online while my wife is sleeping without needing to turn a light on AND being quiet! wow), a lot of them have Good battery life. ETC...ETC...

I'm an e-shop owner, lots of emails e-faxes, shipping stuff, inventory control etc etc..... and also some photoshop work ( we design labels inhouse for all products) so this is a desktop replacement, to be at the office with and haul home daily to continue work on...and back to the office the day after so durability is a must! anything in between 15-17 inches, biger is better if it's kinda light with battery life...size used to be a big deal for me, but I got over it sort of....

I was looking at the following (not all are gaming models) for all around $1000 in no special order.

After reviewing and comparing specs of MANY models, these 6 stand out, each looking good to me.

* N71JV-X1

* N61JQ-X1

* G72GX (Best Buy Model )

* G60VX-RBBX05

G72GX-RBBX05
BEST BUY MODEL

moved to Asus Notebooks

If battery life is important to you, I'd stay away from the quad-core i7 processors. They're very powerful, but they eat up batteries like crazy. On the flip side, the UL50Vt has a great battery life but it's got a weaker processor.

For a decent balance of battery life and performance, I'd suggest the A52Jr. The Core i5 processor is decent and it doesn't drain power like a quad-core. Also you have a graphics card that should be capable of multiple monitor outputs (I believe all the ATI 5000 series cards are) if you need that sort of thing.

Do any of those have backlit keyboards? I didn't think so. N61JQ has USB 3.0 I think.

I thought the Best Buy model has backlit keyboard. Perhaps I was wrong.
post #5 of 12
I could be wrong I just thought most did not have backlit keyboards.

I really think the "i" CPU's are worth a look at for you as you said not a gamer. They all have good cards you don't need a gamer card for among other reasons extra heat..

The G51JX-X1 which is at Newegg is the one I am considering. It is $1299 and is quad core i7.

so stay away freom "i' CPU for better battery life BUT "i' processors will not become obsolete anytime soon I am thinking and can cope with the potentially increased photoshop work that I'm looking at.
hmmmm.....battery life OR better processor?
let me think, and reevaluate.

I feel I cannot go wrong with an ASUS overall.

As it stands at the moment? No, you can't go wrong with an ASUS.

cheers ...

As qhn said you can't go wrong with Asus. No do not stay away from the "i" CPU's they have the i3's and i5's at maybe 25w TDP? They have i7 at 35w TDP. Yes the quad i7 is 45w but the "i" are the current. I would encourage you to get an "i" if it is within budget and meets your needs.

looks like the main vote of for the N61JQ (amazon for $999)

I am still ALMOST CERTAIN about it. Something tells me to consider a macbook pro for two bills more (which is not much, when considering such a long term puchase)

sure, I'd have to downgrade screen size from 16" down a few inches, but it's a freggin macbook, SOLID keyboard, feels nice, etc, etc

not partial to either OS. just the more efficient one of course.

macbook is nice I can vow for it.

Also if you want to wait until April, the N73 will be coming out. It supports dual drive and has a stunning audio performance.

cheers ...

That is a pretty niffty setup for the price. Sad for me the cover looks is a big ugly IMO
