I think my backlight crapped out on me...

What are the symptoms when your LCD backlight craps out? The screen on my i9300 is black but I can see images, although it is very very dark, like the lcd is working but it's not lighting up. Also when the lcd crapped out, there was a burning smell.

If I do need a new LCD, would it be worth it to replace? My laptop runs great and I'd love to keep using it.

Most of the time one can only see the screen with a flashlight pointing to it.

I have a friend with a 9300. I'll prolly hook her lcd up to make sure but I'm pretty sure my backlight is fried. Anyone know of a good source for a new lcd?

Ebay is one place to try

It could be either the LCD or the inverter, try getting an inverter first they are usually around $ 10.00 - $ 15.00

Or if it isn't the inverter, it could be the backlight. The inverter and the backlight are MUCH cheaper to replace than the entire screen.

It can also be the switch that shuts the screen down when you close the lid... These are prone to stick, and even break causing similar symptoms to a dodgy backlight...

Don't know if this works on anything post xp but....
C:\WINDOWS\nircmd.exe monitor off =target

%HOMEDRIVE%%HOMEPATH% = homeroot

make a shortcut of that and it'll manually turn off the screen and back on. I did that to verify that my screen's backlight actually went.

Also when you take it apart, just leave the backlight and inverter plugged in with screen out and turn it on. If you're blinded it should be some switch.

Also if you make that shortcut into an F# hotkey, you have an awesome new way of turning off your lappy screen without closing it. Just fyi.

Sounds like the inverter though if you smelled burning...
