migrating to a new laptop

Thread Starter
not really a sager specific post, but since i have an old sager laptop (a 5690), and planning to get a new laptop (likely a sager, either an an 8690 or a 9280), thought i'd post here.

what's a good way to migrate to a new laptop? i don't want to reload all my software on a new laptop. with the new laptops using the SATA interface, and my current 5690 using the old EIDE interface, i don't think i can simply stick my old laptop hard drive into the new laptop. i was also planning to get the new laptop without an OS. i do have a desktop with SATA, so can i load a backup version of my laptop disk drive from my desktop to a bare laptop drive?

And what OS that you are working with at the moment?

still using XP. i figured i would migrate with XP, then eventually go to windows 7 (again so i would not have to deal with reload everything manually).

I guess you can try to clone the current (IDE) disk to the (SATA) disk, find a away somehow to get the driver in and take a shot at it.

connecting laptop SATA HD to desktop

does anybody know whether or how one can connect a laptop SATA hard drive to a desktop, preferably without any additional hardware? i figure i can do that, then i can format the bare new laptop SATA drive, and place a backed-up image of the old drive on the new drive.

You would need in minimum an adapter.
