HP Pavilion ZD8002AP Upgrade

Hi, I am hoping you can provide some assistance for me in upgrading HP PAvilion ZD8002AP laptop.

1. I believe the HDD is 5400rpm, can you please suggest a 7200rpm model to replace it?

2. I believe the video card is ATI Mobility Radeon X600, is there a newer compatible card I can upgrade this with?

3. Is there a Blu-Ray burner drive I can replace the current DVD burner with?

4. Is there any way I can control cooling fan speed or temperature control? Bios is F.34.

5. I have already upgraded RAM to 2G, is it possible to go to 3 or 4 G?

6. Are there any other upgrades to improve speed and performance for this great laptop model?

Thanks,
Karl.

I used to own a zd8060us model. Good laptop. Make sure to keep it cool though or the video controller will burn out.

1) The WD Momentus 7200rpm drive at Best Buy is good.
2) The internal video controller is soldered to the motherboard and thus not easily replaceable
3) I cannot remember the model number of the drive but there is a Matsushita drive that will fit. However, I don't believe the zd8000 series meets the specs for Blu-ray burning.
4) HP laptops do not support control of fan speed.
5) I believe that the unit will support 4GB unofficially. However, if you are using a 32bit OS like XP, then the max available is 3.3GB as the OS requires the rest for it's overhead.

Confirm if HDD is PATA/IDE or SATA. Your notebook is of an age where it might be PATA? If so SATA will not work.

Thanks for the advice from so long ago, the manual says the interface is ATA-5, so I assume the new Momentus won't work?

I do have a bigger problem though, it seems my display card is now buggered (screen has rolling white pixels everywhere, and I can't use the screen. 2nd external screen works somewhat but still suffers same problem, so it has to be the card).

I am an ex electronic engineer and am good with surface mount soldering etc, so I was wondering if there was another really good graphics card out there that is well recommended and would fit well in this laptop?

And make it go better that it did!

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Karl.

I don't believe that you can upgrade the GPU on this model. If you can the X700 probably is the only best fit. Have you looked into reheating/reflow the GPU?

From the look of the problem, it does seem like a reflow would actually fix it, don't have the equipment any more to do it, but will have a look tomorrow at what I can do.
Just thought while I was at it, I might upgrade if I could. I still love this thing, and it is still fast and is still comparable to some today.
Thanks,
Karl.

I went extreme on 2 HPs - baked the whole board in the oven - one died on me after 8 months, but then it was other issues, the other one is still running after almost a year now.

cheers ...
