x9100 vs i7 720qm

I tried to find the answer myself but I wasn't sure where to look but I'm trying to help out a buddy pick out an m17x. He can get a good deal on an x9100 with 4870's for under 2 grand. Or he can just buy directly from dell and get the i7 with the 4870 for about 2300. I didn't know which one to tell him to get, as he's primarily a gamer. As I recall having 4 cores or more didn't really help out in games and more in encoding, but at the same time he is getting an r1 which is kinda older. I didn't know what to tell him to get but if someone has some insight and suggestions I'd appreciate it, thanks.

"Core-i" over "C2D" every time. It's not just a processor comparison....

ok Cool, lastly I want to ask is the i really needed for gaming? I was told by some other people that the i5 would suffice enough for an average gamer and that you wouldn't necessarily need the i7, how true is that?

Depends on the game itself. The question is whether or not it will take advantage of quad core. The ones that do will perform better but in the end it's the GPU that will count for most games.
