Resurrecting HP Mininote 2133

Hi all,

As many of you might have already known that a lot of HP Mininote have failed to function after certain period of use. And mine did the same ... after two months out of the manufacturer warranty, my Mininote 2133 keeps on freezing to the level it is not usable anymore ... in half an hour of use, I need to reboot 10 times ... From what I read in many forums on the Internet, I think the problem is on the motherboard being overheated.

As I suppose all other components (HD, RAM, etc) are still in working condition ... I am wondering if I can replace the motherboard with an aftermarket motherboard ... (replacing with an HP motherboard cost almost as much as buying a new unit and many have reported the same issue after a short while).

Or, any idea on how to re-purpose the netbook? I mean, it still have a great screen, keyboard, etc ... I don't want to just dump it on the bin.

Thank you for your help.

Take it apart, clean it up, bore some more holes in the bottom casing, use of a netbook cooler .... Those are the things I would try first.

As far as replacing the board with another one "outside" HP it would be tough to crack.

cheers ...

Uhm... not sure if cooling down the notebook while in operation will help at all given that the damage might have been done. The notebook will freeze even before it heats up ...

Haven't had an issue with mine... Do you use it on a solid flat surface and are all the vents clear?

I didn't always use it on a flat surface ... sometimes on my lap with a pillow because it's very hot. But now, even when I use it on a clear flat surface, it still freeze at times.

Got myself into the habit with all laptops, flat solid surface to allow the fans and vents to get air over the CPU and heatsink.. Get a decent notebook cooling tray (usually has USB powered fans)... Before you do that though, run the netbook from cold on a solid flat surface free from all the usual desktop junk that surrounds us all and get a desk fan blowing on it... See what happens... If it still freezes up, it could point to a software issue... Also, reseat the RAM, you have to take the keyboard out for that, which is pretty straightforward (3 screws on the back where the battery goes)...
