2008 Dell laptops with Nvidia dropping like flies.

I have one of the Latitude D630 laptops with the bad Nvidia integrated graphics purchased in January of 2008. Does anyone have a solution for this problem other than giving Dell $400 to fix a two year old laptop that will probably just fail again? No one is responding to the Dell blog http://en.community.dell.com/dell-bl...t-details.aspx . Dell knew they had a problem when they sold me this laptop which is discouraging to say the least. So now what am I supposed to do? Dell was the only vendor I trusted. Has anyone had to deal with this problem and what did you do to fix it? I am stuck in nv4_disp.dll infinite loop hell...

Yes, the graphics chip is toast at this point. Please do not ask me to update the bios or instal latest drivers as this only prolongs the inevitable, complete failure. Is there anyone out there that upgrades these by sodering on a different chip or something???

$400 isn't that bad actually. For parts and labor.

No upgrades for an integrated GPU Sorry

You can always buy a Motherboard on ebay or what ever and replace it yourself if your technically inclinded.

The D630 is actually not that bad to take apart once you get over the initial "OMG I'm-opening-up-this-laptop-I-hope-I-don't-break-it!" phase.

A video to show how to do this:

Thanks for the advice and the link to the video! I have never taken a laptop apart before so I am feeling the pucker factor a bit.

These laptops with Nvidia gpus are really starting to fail as they get about 2 years old. My friend at work bought a D830 2 months after I bought my D630 and he has the same problem now. Finding many complaints online about this:

"Dude we can fix it, my dad's got an awesome set of tools." ... Spicoli

I was that way the first time I took apart a D630 for my job, but after awhile you'll get to the point where it becomes second nature.

Wait, your laptop's only 2 years old and out of warranty? When I bought my D820 5 years ago the base option was a 3 year depot warranty. 3 year warranty has been standard on Latitudes for quite some time now.
