Dell Inspiron 1501 processor options

My sister's old Inspiron 1501 started having power problems and would not power up so I now have it up on my bench.

I noticed that the power connector jack was broken so I suspect part of the problem was that it was not getting good contacts. I have a new DC jack on order.

Since I now have this puppy open, The processor is an AMD Turion 64 TMDMK36HAX4CM Which tells me that this is a 2Ghz single core Turion. (for some reason when I worked on her machine before I thought it was an X2 Turion) As part of rebuilding this machine, I want to upgrade the processor.

What is the fasted processor that this MB supports without a BIOS update and with a BIOS update that would be recommended?

Thanks for your answers in advanced!

A TL 50, and TL 56 for sure

I believe you could go up to a TL-64, but not worth the price IMO

Thanks for the info Dave. (I am not as up as I used to be on processor upgrade paths.)

Based on the AMD Processor Family Wiki, I don't see why the TL64 should not work if the TL50 and TL56 are know to be plug and go compatible. If the MB clocking can't handle the higher clock, the processor certainly can down clock and the BIOS should be able to handle it. (my thoughts)

TL64 should work fine with bios of its year. Just be sure to verify with bios once upgrade is complete.

Thanks all. I resurrected the machine and I currently have Puppy running on the old processor and 1Gig of ram. I am going to go ahead and throw 4 Gig on it since I have seen that it will take 4G although Dell says 2 Gig.

Outside of the cheezy feel of the machine and the keyboard, it is pretty cool. Don't know what I am going to do with it as I have too many machines now and I squeeze them til they die!. Maybe I should call myself the laptop resurrector! I am a dangerous man with a soldering iron in my hand and an o-scope by my side!

C-Yall later! Thanks for the help!
