So my computer just crapped out.. - Page 2

So right now, I'm leaning away from the M11x and towards the Sager 2180. Prices on both are around $925 for the setup I want (4GB ram, 320GB+ hard drive). I've set $1k as my ceiling, and that's getting a computer that's going to try to last 4+ years. It's got several advantages for the same price considering this package will have to be our main desk computer until I can buy a monitor, at which point it will act like a docked station...Obviously, I'm waiting for your full review of the M11x Steve, but that's where my leaning is right now. What I'd really like to find is a similar rig to the 2180 that also has integrated graphics so you can switch them back and forth, like the M11x. If you know of a 14-15" screen model that has that for $1k, that might be the end-all winner.

+'s:
15" full HD screen
Better Video card
Better processor

-'s:
battery life

I know of a couple that are on the horizon, but they haven't been released yet and I'm pretty sure none have the same graphics power as the Sager 2180, but the closest are the Asus N63J and N82J models.

Reviving this thread. So it looks like my CPU was part of the whole Nvidia class action issue.
With that said, I'm qualified for the extra year of dell warranty (which would be up at the end of this month itself), so i called them and they're going to send me a box to send it in for repair.
I would have liked to get a replacement, but wasn't successful in getting them to see it that way. Should I just have been more obstinate? My concern with repair is that a burning up video card for the last 3 years will have caused other damage to other components that will die out sooner than they should. I"m sure I'll have no warranty of any value once I get the repair back.

Any advice on how I could have best handled this, adn what I should do going forward to make sure I'm covered? Should I have required them to give me more warranty in the future or something?

Give this ^^ argument a shot when you get the box, write a nice note to send it along. Or you can try getting a rep and negotiate some pay-in for a system upgrade with extended warranty. Giving this a one-time settlement I doubt tha you can get any extra out of it. Good luck

If the terms of settlement are met I doubt you get more.

Well, I got the lappy back from Dell.

They put in a new 7900 GS, and everything appears to be running normal. THey replaced the keyboard as well, and it gave me some funny business at first (B and N key weren't working) but seems to be doing fine now.

Haven't had a chance to really put it through it's paces in terms of the video card, but it appears to be working well. Now I just need to figure out how to clear up about some hard drive space.

Great stuff shlo_mo. Hope your new 7900GS last longer than a few that was being replaced.

cheers ...

If it just lasts 1 year, that'll probably do it for this computer. It's only got a 100GB hard drive, and the new stuff out is so much cheaper and better. I paid almost 2k for this rig 4 years ago, and now a $700 lappy would easily eclipse it.

I've already got copies of Win7premium and Office 2010 waiting for a new computer to install on, so really it's just a matter of this one getting me through till I free up enough cash for that purchase.
