Toshiba NB200-12R

Having owned the MSI Wind when it first came out I must say that there is not much in changes within Net-books internal design. Intel is still very much in command in this area.

Asus is still ahead of the game with the quantity sold worldwide.
Yet Acer, Samsung, LG, HP, Dell and others do offer good models to carve themselves a good niche. Toshiba is one of the latters.

Toshiba NB200 (known also as Dynabook UX) presents itself as a good companion for on the go, and fun. It is lightweight with solid build and comfortable to type and browse. The battery offers up to 9 hours of power, enough to support a day of travel with no extra cords being lugged around.

Brown, pink, blue and white make up the line up of this model.

I came across this Toshiba model when visiting a local electronic store. It was part of the many netbooks on display. Having a chance to play with each and every single one, the Toshiba NB200 stood out as a perfect mini notebook to replace (or must I say to join) my reliable 12.1" MSI. The international limited warranty coverage tilted the balance in favor of getting the netbook.

Pricing at 499Euro-ish, this machine is not so competitive in price comparing to others. But its packed specifications and performance can easily justify the difference. The sleek design, the lightweight beauty and the solid hardware live up to the reputation of take&go machines and Toshiba quality.

Looks & Design
This is one attractive netbook out there. The lid is a mixture of pearl white diagonal strip and silver logo. Still the power button in the middle can be quite distracting when it is on

The keyboard layout is pleasing to the eyes, being different to the chiklet style that accompanies other systems. The large protruding battery on the back can be a turn off sometimes but one can be thankful of the extended battery life performance when on the road.

Extended screen view:

Screen:

Its 10.1" glossy screen is LED back-lit with good viewing angles, performs well in the bright environment.

Keyboard

The keys are of large size and easy to accommodate thick fat fingers. Too bad for the TAB key that gives me pain when typing fast. But one can get used to it quick enough.

* small tab key

Touchpad

Toshiba NB200 comes with a large Alps touchpad measuring 78.5 x 40.5mm. Its operation can be easily customized with the delivered utility/software. Corner operations, scroll areas, browser control relevant ... you name it, the software will lend its hand to make the choices easy to access.

The two buttons have a nice, soft action that provides sufficient physical feedback to confirm that something has been clicked on.

Press both buttons at once, and the touchpad is being put into autoscroll mode.

Multimedia Keys

Wireless Performance

Good connectivity, with its ability to quickly find and connect to the home network. Bluetooth performance is great with mouse, handy (cell phone), keyboard connectivity.

Optical Drive

As with many sub notebooks the Toshiba NB-200 does not come stock with a built-in optical drive. I got myself an external slim housing and install a blu-ray drive from a broken notebook and it works great.

Sound

Surprisingly good clear sound from the built-in speakers of this small comp.

Heat and Noise

The Toshiba NB200 is very quiet even at full blast. Using GMA Booster to put the core at 2.4Ghz I can barely hear the fan or the drive. It does get warm if no space is present between the bottom case and the working desktop.

Gaming Performance

Doubt that much can be had in this gaming area giving the small CPU and integrated GMA card. I need to dig into this a big further since I heard great things can be done in games on netbooks in general.

System Performance

What can I say other than browsing, working on office documents and watching media materials are smooth on this small system. I can open a large excel and powerpoint documents at the same time and switch between the 2 with ease.

Gaming Possibilities

Battery Life

Toshiba NB200 is ranked top in netbook video playback battery test pulling at good 372 minutes of play.

The newer NB305 model is sleeker in design and hides the battery underneath instead of the protruding back. It also offers shorter battery performance.

Pros:

. Nice and stylish
. Good screen performance
. Good system performance
. Good battery life
. (Very) Quiet Operation

Cons:

. A bit warm at times
. Exposed power button that can be switched on.
. Tab key a bit small

Conclusion:
The Toshiba NB200 is a solid all-around netbook that can be a good traveling companion. The lack of a built-in optical drive does not affect the usage of the system. Even with just the b/g wireless device, I am able to connect to all home and work networks with ease. Using the standard resolution the screen offers good clear viewing during browsing, office works and media playback. Surprisingly the speakers are clear for a small foot print notebook. I am further pleased by Windows 7 Ultimate performance on this comp. There is no shortage in system resources when switching between tasks.

Verdict - recommendable.
