AW M17xR2 - Core i7-920XM - ATI 5870 GDDR5 Thread!!

Time to start up a new thread for the upcoming GPU refresh for the Alienware M17xR2!

Both Asus and Clevo have the option to buy a notebook with a single ATI 5870 GPU in it. This will be the first with the 5870 in a crossfire setup. I plan to add a lot of info on how to OC the processor and the GPU in the M17x when the system comes in. Anyone else have one on order? This should be fun!!

Sounds awesome, yet too expensive.

IT should be an impressive laptop with those GPU's

Still want to see what Fermi will bring to the table (in comparison)

In 2 years I'll get a new laptop...which will make this one look like the biggest piece of shatcake ever.

and not even a tasty piece.

2 years? That's probably 10-15 notebooks away.

And the M17x will still be one power house laptop lol

USB 3 (still want it and not via some card that sticks out the side)
NV DX11 (would like to see what is offered)

But I'm sorely tempted. Very sorely tempted, because I have been holding off for a while now.

If whatever they release in the mobile market is called "fermi" you can almost bet it has nothing to do with the real fermi. We will see.

Edit: Day 3 boxing. I'm sure it's already in Tennessee waiting to be shipped. I'm guessing a Monday or Tuesday delivery.
Edit#2: Now shipped. EDD is Monday.

Mine was ordered with 4870s. I'm trying to get the 5870s separately and I think I succeeded.

OK I got the system and a 5870 but it does not work. Has anyone received a M17x in the last week? Can you tell me what your system bios version is?

From what I've read on another forum, they've been coming with A04.

Yep. :P

My system (with a single 5870) is scheduled to ship on Friday and arrive on Monday (unless the CF option becomes available on Wednesday, as rumored, and I call and successfully get it changed), so I'll let you know what I've got when it arrives.

I bet I'm going to need a new system bios. How computer literate are you? Do you know how to back it up?

Very. I work in IT, and build my own desktops.
