Ubuntu gets "Lucid" - new version released

For those waiting for the next final version of the world's most popular Linux distribution, your wait is over. Ubuntu 10.04 LTS (long term support) is released. Download it now from Ubuntu.com and let us know what you think!

I personally run Gentoo, but have used Ubuntu in the past. I was shocked when a good friend of mine who's been running Kubuntu for a few years came over to my place and was running Debian!

The reason for the surprise is this guy isn't a techie by any stretch. It seems that Debian has finally entered the 21st century and now has an installer worthy of a that great distro!

I mention all of this because I never in a million years thought I'd ever see him running Debian. He explained to me that he was tired of finding apps he wanted missing from the Ubuntu repos but in Debian. So he decided to just make the jump. He's now running Debian "testing" and loving it!

If you're new to Linux go ahead and try Ubuntu or Kubuntu, but once you're ready to take the "training wheels" off then go for a "real distro" like Debian or Gentoo. You will be well rewarded.

Ciao

Hmm strange, usually getting packages in Ubuntu isn't really a problem, coming from someone that helps with support for Ardour, and often has to point people to different sources for packages to install.

Well, upgraded it overnight and in a word 'DON'T'... As usual I thought I would try both methods of clean-v-upgrade... Clean wins hands down every time... Quicker download, burn to disc, back up your stuff, install about an hour, 2 hours tops... Doing the upgrade way (9.10 to 10.04), over 4 hours to download the packages, another 2 buggering about, then the annoying grub message about drives for booting, followed by the usual system checks - left overnight, not completed till 0700am next day.... And to top it off had the firefox 3.6 bug of crashing on opening, which I narrowed down to an unsupported repository called 'libmoon' which is an old equivalent of M$$$'s silverlight...

But once all sorted, running absolutely fine.. All my pre 10.04 configurations are as is, apart from AWN dock manager which wouldn't start on the first few boots, but does so now (I think FF caused that)...

And yes, it is the 64bit version.... So my advice is download the .iso file. Backup all your stuff. Burn the .iso to a disc. Run as a live CD/DVD to make sure everything works.. Then run the install from there...

Is it worth upgrading - yes if you have new hardware, no if your 9.04, 9.10 is running sweet how you like.....

This sounds like MoonLight, which is neither old, nor unsupported to my knowledge, but is not supported by Microsoft. It is an open source implementation of Silverlight.

So where might the volume control be?

I ran FF in 'safe mode' and in the text box it always halted at 'libmoon'... I checked it out using synaptic and it came back as unsupported, so I removed it and got FF working... However, it was unbelievably sllllooooooowwwww... Took at least a minute to load google... So I downloaded fasterfox as an add-on and that did the trick... Also set Opera up which is a lot faster, but takes a bit of getting used too... (needed Moonlight to run a DVD ripping program and it worked for that).....

All good now and for what I am using it for, or have used not a great deal has changed on the face of it... My next step is to put on on my NC10 netbook....

Also, when I have the time, I may give ultimate a go.....

DON'T, DO NOT install 10.04 on a system that dual boots, it hoses the boot record for the other system.....

To my knowledge that was fixed before the ISOs were officially released, in fact that was exactly WHY the ISOs were actually delayed is they wanted to fix that bug. You have experience that says otherwise?

I know someone who upgraded and had this happen to him.

I can run this new version by live cd right? Stupid question?

Yes, I lost the ability to boot into my Vista partition... Not a biggie as I hardly ever go there, but annoying just the same... I have it dual booting on my Sony laptop too, so I won't be upgrading that.... I just caught a snippet of this bug on a tech site, and didn't pick up on it... GRrrrrr (and this happened the day after the 'official' relesase)...

FIX thats sorted it all out for me....

How and when precisely did they upgrade?

The way I know of that this happened to some people was upgrading, not reinstalling. If the install was from an ISO, this shouldn't be happening to my knowledge, but if they upgraded before the ISOs were rebuilt(The release day) then this should not happen.

See my above, if you upgraded before the ISOs were finished rebuilding via the system upgrade tool, you might have been bit by this. But after the ISOs were respun the upgrade via reinstall path should work fine to my knowledge, and I believe even the upgrade via system upgrade path should be working fine now as well, but am not as sure about that.

it was very soon after release, but I'm not quite sure when. He said he upgraded "by accident" and meant to only update, not upgrade.

I just downloaded the 64-bit version. Should I be concerned about that problem or can I go on ahead and install it?

From what I understand, if you downloaded the "respun" version, it should be fine. Even if you downloaded prior to the respun version, you should be fine as long as you're not dual-booting.

You should be fine, I posted a link to a fix anyway.... I would be tempted to either disconnect to the hard drive with windows on it and install to the linux drive IF this is being installed to a desktop with more than 1 drive, or read up on the GRUB installer, because GRUB2 is the issue, but it is usually the users (like me) fault for not reading the screen, bug faults and so on....
