Trying to Diagnose Power Problems - M-6750

Hello - I found a red gateway laptop, model m6750 at a garage sale for $40. The owner said that he didn't have the ac adapter anymore, and was selling cheap. He removed the hard drive, and since opening, found that the wireless card was fubar'ed.

When I got it home, I plugged in my universal adapter, and nothing. No battery light, nothing. Took the battery out, pressed the power button for 30 seconds, still nothing. I took out the cmos battery for a minute or two with the same results - nothing.

Are there any suggestions on where to start here? One thing I am not sure of is whether or not I need a hard drive in order to post to bios. If I do, then I'll have to find one and then try again. Doesn't seem like I should need a hard drive just to get to the bios screen, but this is the first Gateway I've ever had to work on.

Any help or suggestions would be helpful. If there is a service manual or a schematic, that would be helpful as well.

Thanks for your time - Adam

google that stuff up for the manuals. You'll need to get the post started, do any lights come on at all? If not it might be an actual problem with the board being broken. (aka. not getting any power at all)
Shouldve asked the owner what went wrong with it.

It could be a bad board, bad cpu, bad ram modules.

cheers ...

Like you said, it didnt have an a/c adapter and if the one you are using doesnt supply the correct voltage for that unit, it wont work. If the one you are using or tried to use, was a larger voltage, you could have screwed something up in the systemboard too

Thanks for the response - I am using a universal power supply, and the model number is listed as being compatible. I'll try to dig up a service manual or some such and keep trying...
