Help installing superdrive in powerbook g4

Thread Starter
So I have completely disassembled my new to me g4 and i bought a superdrive to replace the nonfunctional cdrw.If I plug it in then turn on the laptop it will not start. Just goes to blank screen. If I plug it in with the laptop is on I get the multicolor wheel and nothing else happens. I need to know the steps to do this right. The reason I took it apart in the first place was to replace the outer aluminum case which was in poor shape. Picked up some reasonably priced parts in better condition off ebay. This is my first Apple product so I'm just trying to get my feet wet. If more info is needed from me let me know. Thanks for the help!

Don't plug it in while power is going to the laptop, IDE(Going off memory I believe that one is) does not handle that well, and it is conceivable you could damage something.

Not sure why it isn't turning on otherwise, sorry. You should plug the CD player in first, then return the battery and restore power. Can't remember if I replaced the CD drive in my original powerbook, don't think I ever did, just my MBP.
