M1530 Processor Upgrade

Hi all,
Sorry, I've been out of the hardware game for quite some time. Cisco for 2 years will make you forget stuff.

I have a Dell XPS M1530, T9300 processor. I am wondering if I can upgrade to the T9900. Also, my current processor is 32 bit. Can I get a T9900 in 64 bit, and will it work with my mobo? OS doesn't matter, can redo it. I am trying to beef it up for better gaming. 3gb ram is killing me...

Another question. Just wondering if it is possible to get an i5 or i7 instead? Will the i7 physically fit into the slot? 45nm

Yet another question. The laptop runs hot already. With a processor upgrade, surely it will run hotter. Any suggestions on getting the temp down without any case mods?

I will start with the I Core processors, no it will not work. different chipset required, and not the same socket.

Your laptop supports a 64 Bit OS, but I believe the CPU data buss is still 32 bit. but it would still work faster with a 64 bit OS installed. The Santa rosa chipset supports the Core 2 Duo processors. I am just not sure your BIOS will reconize a T9900.

as far as the T9900 it will not help gaming that much more, your better to go to 4 Gb of memory, and if using a 5400 RPM hard drive upgrade to a 7200 RPM drive.

Which GPU do you have installed ?

as far as heat - if you have not already probably should open up the laptop and clean out the fans, and heat pipes on the unit. and at the same time replace the thermal compound on the CPU and GPU.

and the newer Core duo CPUs may actually run cooler or the same as the t9300 you have now.

Thank you for your reply.
I figured just as much for the i core. I have the centrino set, which I understand is a 3 part pack from intel that works together...

The T9900 has a 1066mhz FSB, but the T9300 has an 800Mhz FSB. Is my mobo restricted to the 800mhz bus? The 1066 is what I'm most interested in for an upgrade.

I have been under the impression that anything over 4gb will not be recognized due to the 32bit processor. Is this true?

I have the 8600GT which I understand is the best that can go into the 1530. Is it even possible to upgrade it? I know the 8600 isn't a bad card though, I'm mainly wondering if it is possible.

I have cleaned the cooling system before. The m1530 is notorious for running hot; I was wondering if there were any mods that may be better. ie: better fan, different airflow, case mod if needed.

even if the BIOS reconizes the t9900 CPU it will still down clock to 800 FSB. thats all the chip set supports, and memory still runs at 667 Mhz I beleive.

you can run a 64 bit OS so you should be able to go above 4 GB of memory, but 4 GB is all you really need.

a 32 bit OS will not go above the 4 GB (usuable is about 3.25 GB).

if you already have the 8600GT than that is as far as you can go.

Ditto to above.

But wouldn't the memory run at 800 just with more latency...?

According to the Dell docs the memory runs @ 667 Mhz, even with a 800 mhz CPU FSB

I thought that everything on the board runs at the FSB speed on a laptop...except in the case of the new cpu's without fsbs.

Maybe I need someone to re-explain how this stuff works : P

All the various frequencies CPU, GPU, Data Buss, Memory, Etc are by chipset design.

FSB frequencies can be strickly an internal clock rate for the CPU, and then a different frequency used for the PCIe and Memory buss.

My guess in this case was to be able to use the cheaper 667 Mhz in the design of the mobo.

What controls the frequencies? just the northbridge?
