Pavilion zd7020us power troubleshooting issues

I've been trying to get to the bottom of why this notebook won't power up at allhttp://www.notebookforums.com/images/smilies/huh.gif. Here's what's happening:

Got the notebook from a friend, came with no power adapter and no battery. I tried substituting a known good adapter from another laptop, same 19V, a bit less power (90W). I've done this before on other laptops and they'll crank up OK, even if they require a bit more than the adapter is rated for, only for a brief test, as the adapter run hot if left for a long time.

Anyway, when the adapter is plugged in, all the top panel buttons light up for just a moment, then go off, except the power button remains on, and the front lip Power and Plugged In icons stay on. Pressing the power button does nothing, nada, zilch. No fans, hard drive spin-up, blank screen, absolute death silence. The same adapter (non-HP) runs other laptops just fine.

I hate to give up on this one, it's a great older notebook, HUGE screen, two 1 GB sticks on-board, 160 GB hdd, not beat up. But I don't want to dump a bunch of money on it or throw parts at it unless I'm sure of the problem, and if it's worth fixing. I read through HP's troubleshooter section, it doesn't cover this situation or this notebook. Whaddya' think? To get it going, I MAY need a new power adapter, but I'm thinking it's not at fault (eb-Y generic) and a battery. If it turns out to be a zorched mobo, then I'll probably just end up (sob!) scrapping it and pull the RAM sticks and hdd to donate to another machine.

Some mobos (internal power management circuitry) can be very finicky about what they will or will not start on. And generic asian electronic anything is never very reliable even under the best times. Best idea would probably just be to buy a more "exact" power adapter to match the computer and see what happens....it's probably worth the money since you'd get a free computer out of it if it works.

You might also first consider trying to boot with everything yanked out (RAM, hdd, CD ROM)...to make sure you're not overloading the brick's supply ability.

After removing 1 component at a time, still no response from the laptop. I pulled each memory module individually, the wireless card, the hard drive, the DVD drive........NO response other than before. Reinstalled the components in a different order, but still no joy. Just the button LEDs blink on for a second each time, then only the power button LED remains on, same as before. I tried this with both a 90 watt and a 120 watt supply, both 19VDC. The 90 watt is for my Asus G1 15" laptop, the 120 watt is for another Gateway 15" laptop. Either one will run the other machine no problem. The recommended power for the laptop is 120 watts. I'm afraid the mobo may be gone.

I'm in agreement with you. If you tried giving it the full 120W and it still didn't want to turn over, then it's probably something wrong with the power circuitry (I've also heard of bad fan sensors causing non-posts). You might consider taking the laptop apart (search HP for the maint manual) and see if you can find any obvious solder non-connections starting in the region where you plug it in.

Lots of work and you might break something in the process, but it's not like you have much to lose.
