Will I Be able to install a 5870XF dual SLI DX11 card in my M17x?

I just bought a Alienware M17x R1 from a reseller on Ebay last month for$2,600.

My current specs is:

Intel QX9300 CPU

Bios A03

8GB 1066MHz dual ram

Nvidia 280GTX 1GB dual SLI

500GB 7200rpm hdd

I want to know if the new 5870XFdual SLI card when they come available if my motherboard will support the card?

Will I be able to buy the card from Alienware?

Just want to know that I did not waste my money on getting a system I can't upgrade the video card at the price I paid.

I know that my motherboard will not support the new "i"series cpu.

Thanks,

Ko

Plus I have read the M17x R-1 has a PCI express 2.0 x16 slot, and the R2 has a PCI express 2.1 x16 slot,

The ATI HD 5870M is PCI express 2.1 x16 card so hardware may not be compatible either

Again a BIOS update may do it, but I doubt Dell is going to relase one on a unit that is no longer made

here is a response from Dells Message forums Chris M.

"I was told today that the ATI Radeon Mobility HD 5870 will not be validated in the M17x R1 or the M15x."

but there will be no hardware updates for the R1,

thus the statement from Dell that the 58xx cards will be validated with the R1.

Meh I'm surprised I'm going to be the first one to say it in this thread, but for that kind of cabbage you probably should have gone with an R2, unless you hate ATI that much and wanted Nvidia. Me? I love my R-2. And correction or adjustments on Dave's Rep posting. The 5870 WILL work on a m15x but NOT on a r-1. Apparently the MXM type is a little different some type of revision like a 10.1 or b added. All I know is that it has a minor revision on it that makes it subtlety different, but different enough, my source if you must know is notebookreview.com reading through the threads, and someone from Dell his name was like ChrisDell whom the forum moderators acknowledged as being a real Representative said this in there.

I have some cash coming in so I may dump the R1 and just get a R2 shortly.

The RGB LED, and the i7 chips make the R2 that much more worth it, especially at the same price point of an r1, it's in my personal opinion and I'm thinking others will agree with me here, but at over 2 G's you really should be getting an R2, R1 only if you're under 2G. So anyone trying to sell an R1 for 2G+ good luck to them, is all I have to say.

^^ I see many m17x here in Europe around $1500. The R1 is losing value quick.

cheers ...

YEah see, that and dell outlet has been flooding with them as of late, but there has been issues with the quad core version of the M17x, so if you do pick up a m17x I highly suggest that you go with a Dual Core Chip, if you want quad core you go with the i7 series. I'm saying this to ALL m17x users or future users, if you do your research you'll find multiple people saying the same thing.

Funny that the Clevo of the same specs of the m17x is commanding quite high price. Dell needs to give the developers time to sort out the issue with software and BIOS before selling stuffs.

cheers ...

Oh and if wasn't said in the thread already, dave hinted and left room for the slight, but the 5870 will NOT WORK in the m17x r-1 yet another reason upon the 10 already known reasons as to why you should be getting an R2 m17x over an r1
