New A04 BIOS release for the M17x-R1

now available on Dells Site for download.

HOW EVER I DO NOT RECOMMEND THIS UPDAYE, ONCE AGAIN DELL HAS RELEASED A BUGGY BIOS UPDATE

THIS ONE CAUSES ISSUES WITH AN INCORRECTLY REPORTED AC ADAPTOR RATING (READS AS A 193 WATT) WHICH RESULTS IN LOWER CPU PERFORMANCE AND WILL NOT CHARGE THE BATTERY

Doesn't look like anything significant was done with it.

Would you recommend it then?

I am one who always like to keep the lastest files, Drivers, and BIOS installed.

I do that also - minus the BIOS unless I really need it.

there was some reports that this release causes issues with the power adaptor detection in the BIOS

yepp if you ever had your m17x totally inopertive A04 could help a lot
i used a04 for a day and really disappointed... serious issues with the charging and the charger itself during a 5 hour gaming period my power brick is overheated 4 times and i lost power not even the blue light was on the cable by the side i just got a brand new systemboard a week ago so is not hw fault the shuttering and jerking mouse cursor also came back ...the best is a03 for now

They need more time to test between BIOS version. Then again there are not many m17x being made available to the lab.

i tried one more time today not go:
Result : unknown power adaptor ??? 132W Goood!
every time when i unplug the cord...so annoynce go in bios and turn off hybrid sli and integrated GPU... am i wrong if i dare say for a £2000 worth laptop we could expect not to release ALFA stage bios it seriously worst than A01 or X33 i had before so back to A03 and will stay like that....

it is expected that they will release a new NVIDIA 480 series GPU with the M17x keep an eye out for it.

i guess is going to be a complete disaster runing the most powerful gpu's on pci-e x8 or just cut the bandwith to x4 please

From what I have read a new motherboard is likley as the 480 GPU is rumoured to have a 100 watt draw, and the present mobo is limited to 75 watt.

So unless they seriuosly under clock it we'll see a new Motherboard.

Besides the present Intel board in the R2 does not support SLI either if I recall.

nVidia hasn't got a hand on completion of testing this new GPU - on desktop. This sounds crazy Dave. They just want to push sales?

I started getting AC Adaptor warnings (reads as a 193 watt) and would not charge the battery.

So I reverted to the A03 bios and had to reset the computer.

BIOS UPDATE GONE HORRIBLY WRONG...!!!

Ok...so after runnig flawlessly my M17x has started to come up with problems.
1. The slot-load optical drive failed (got it replaced)
2. The WPAN Card cable is damaged, have to replace the entire LCD panel now (still to be replaced)
3. And finally today the BIOS update has gone wrong horribly.

So since yesterday I had a problem with my CPU usage being at 100%. I discovered this happened every time I plugged the AC adapter in or out. So I decided to update the BIOS(I am a noob at this). Finally I updated the BIOS from A02 to A04. BAM!!! The lappy crashed at the Windows boot screen, there was a flash of the Blue screen ( SCREEN OF DEATH). So I did the ALIENRESPAWN system recovery. FAILED...!! The problem was still there. Called up tech support and after an hour long tweaking here and there he finally asked me to reinstall Windows. So I did. Finally, it booted up and windows was running. Ok good. Restored my BIOS to previous version from the USB flash disk. I thought at least after restoring th BIOS the ALIENRESPAWN would work. But to my dismay, it didnt. Firstly it gave me the error message that " User partition is corrupt", so I did the recovery from the Alienrespawn disc. FAILED!!! The same Blue Screen of Death. Finally re-installed windows again, and everything is runnig fine...!

But I am still frustrated because:
1. I lost all my data, including my college architecture projects..!!!
2. I guess I can never do a Factory Setting system recovery now, since i guess it is corrupted...!

Any of you guys have faced this problem?
Any help would be greatly appreciated. I just want to recover my system back to FACTORY SETTINGS...!

OK. I have somehow FINALLY managed to get back to the FACTORY IMAGE...!
Yesterday I had 2 Windows installations. One said " Windows 7 Home Premium (Recovered) ". This one was crashing with the blue screen. So I decided to change BIOS settings (since the BIOS change had caused the failure). And I accidentally discovered that BIOS change actually worked. So then I decided if the "blue screen" problem was solved for this installation, it might be solved for the Recovery image too. Did an Alienrespawn Recovery. To my dismay didnt work. So I changed the HDD configuration from AHCI to ATA. Damn. Didnt work either. Last resort, RAID configuration. And BINGO. IT WORKED LIKE A CHARM!!!!

Finally I am happy to have the factory settings back, and now I dont have to waste my time with the Tech support also.!!!

Cheers...
