Dell Insprion 9300 CPU won't run at max capable speed - Page 2

run the diagnotics as sugested above,

Also try monitoring the fan speeds make sure both the CPU and GPU fans are reporting thier speeds,

if either one of the fan speeds is not detected by the Mobo it can cause the laptop to throttle down the clocks.

Also monitor the GPU and CPU temps.

i think you are down to either a sensor issue or faulty Mobo.

Well, I plan to take it apart and check the socket. It was working fine with the previous CPU, maybe something pin wise is messed up. Don't know....

I'll have to reload the diagnostics, but pretty sure the fans are fine. Just replaced the one, and when trying a game the video was fine. I use Arctic Silver 5 on each also and polished both HS mating surfaces long ago....

My guess:

Your DC joint or AC Adapter is bad.

When Dell's cant detect the power supply it always runs at the lowest speed. On my old 9300 I used to use Notebook Hardware control and force the speed to max.

which makes me think...what does the BIOS report for your AC adpator is it identified correctly ?

trick is to boot the laptop without the AC adapter. After booting then plug it in. Jiggling the cable on my laptop will sometimes push the CPU up to the right speed. But of course im a windows guy.

I actually used this trick once in a while - kinda charlatan approach that works

cheers ...

Well, I tried all your tricks, nothing helped. So last night after several weeks of running at 800Mhz, I took it apart, Vacuumed it well, re-did the AS5 and put it back together. Wont boot up at all now. Get a couple LED's blinking for about 30 seconds then they go off. This evening I took it back apart, even tried blowing out under the MB (removed a couple screws to lightly pry up an edge). Saw nothing amiss, every connector looked fine. Put it back together, no help. Few lights (Fans don't even start up) and then nothing...

Any ideas?

Yes.....

I just didn't do that once. and got the same symptoms.

I actually pulled out the CPU a couple times to make sure (Magnifying Glass) the socket was good and same with the pins on the CPU, all looked fine. Weirdness!

Maybe I'll try another CPU, can't find the original one yet.....
Well, tried the original CPU....didn't help. Something died on the MB I fear. Didn't really want to buy another laptop at this time....even with my discounts I see nothing from them that excite me. Maybe I'll look at Asus....

Suppose I can Ebay this one minus HD....great screen, all the other parts are fine.
Sell it in parts - you'd get more that way. Look around for a beat up broken notebook where the same motherboard is intact also. Good luck.

cheers ...

I'm sorta torn, can get another MB, but its never ran Win 7 real great, was getting stutters in games though maybe that was the OC tool. (These are old games too that ran fine in XP)

If I sell, yeah I'll part out, Got 3 CPU's, Both upgrade and OEM ram, 6800Go, 2nd Gen 1440-900 Screen, Wireless, New DVD writer, etc....
