Can I really use this power adapter for my M6500?

I really would like to get two of these, since they are less than 1/3 of the price of the adapters I can get in Norway, but I'm a bit suspicious. The original adapter for my Precision M6500 is 210 watts (which is totally crazy, but I guess the Fire GL card eats most of it), and this is rated at 90w. But will it even work? Here's the eBay auction, it's in Great Britain:

Any good thoughts of this?

It claims "Original Genuine DELL" so it should work, non? Maybe Dave can chip in on this

Yeah, original Dell, but less than half the wattage! That's what makes me wonder...

More wattage is always good when one uses lots of peripheral devices, especially with a docking station. Other than that if it can charge the battery, it is fine.

Personal thinking of course

Yeah, good point. This would be for travel. Without much extra at all. Maybe I'm lucky! But it would be good to be sure... Maybe I'll ask them if they will pay the return shipping if it doesn't work on my M6500? Then they should be inclined to tell the truth...

There you have it.

It should work, I have a M6400 and while the 210 watt is good for home, I actually use a 65 watt "car adapter" and it works fine. It might take a little longer to charge the battery but it works for me...

90 watt will not be enough for the M6500. you need the 210 Watt or the 240 watt.

it will not charge the battery for sure, and it may not even boot up.

Thanks! I'll drop it then. Turns out the seller doesn't really know what he's talking about anyway.

Yeah, right. The adapter that's running my M6500 only has 210w printed on it for fun! I think I'll rather listen to people who knows their stuff...like you.

They are really serious in the "desktop replacement" labeling aren't they?

Well, they're still 1/3 of the PSU I use on my only i7 desktop computer (which is running my home theater). That has a 650 watt PSU, and I really had to use that. The 500 watt I tried couldn't cope. Of course the computer is so overclocked that every time I turn it on the display says: "4.1 gHz? You gotta be sh...tin me!"

I have run my M6400 on my 130 Watt brick, but 90 is too little.

again it would not charge the battery if I did anything requiring serious GPU power - aka gaming

Well, I have ordered two original 210w PA-7E adapters instead. Found them with a good price and a nice seller who will mark them down for me (Norwegian customs fees are pure blackmail). Two new adapters with shipping for less than I would have to pay for one in Norway. I'm satisfied.

You would not want the brick to do anything else but keeping system going well during gaming, non? Multi-tasking can be detrimental to the adapter in this instance.

It wouldn't just run off battery? It really wouldn't boot with an underpowered adapter?

Another ? , for the docking station, are you limited to amperage to the usb ports. I've never used a dock before, is it a fast interface. aka pci-express?

The docking is as fast as if it's connected to the mainboard. eSata, DVI ports and all. Anyway, with the PSU's I'm expecting in the mail next week this is no more a problem for me.
Sick. Good way to add an external video card, cept the docks from what I've heard aren't big enough to accomidate big pci-express x16 cards. Wouldn't that be awesome if that could happen with useable 16 lanes.

Well, the Dell stations do not allow adding cards, they are simply a full speed connection to the motherboard. Of course with a Fire GL I don't need anything faster for now...
Any docks that do allow pci-express? full not half sized cards?

M6500 work with any Dell power adapter greater than 90w adapter. During the boot, it gives warning message. it is saying that it will not provide the maximum performance. Based on my experience, it charges when system is running light load. It stop charging when the heavy app is running. When system is powered down, power adapter charge the battery. I forgot to bring my 210/240W power adapter once and borrowed the coworker's Dell 90W adapter. It charged the battery. and, I could boot the system. It seems Dell did proper design of the system.
