My first post! Ive got a Gen2/m170 that i want to upgrade the GPU on but have been a little confused about something. Can anyone give me a definitive answer? I want to know if you can make the 7800 GS go work in a m170. -= NOT 7800 GTX=- ...i know that works...plus im having the "disk error " and ive tried three different working HDDs to test with (controller going out?). Ive been lurking here for a bit and really appreciate ALL the knowledge and help here! TIA!

Hmmmm ...well thats kind of what i was confused about, Dave. There is the 7800 go vanilla card which is from the e1705/9400 and the regular 7800 gtx(gen2/m1710/etc). I know the form factor is slightly different but would it actually work if it could be modded? I think the thing ive seen about the form factor is that it covers the power switch and a post is in the way (like in the whole 7900 saga)...BUT ...if I swap the heatsink with my 6800 and mod the power switch wires somehow to work around that...is there any other reason it shouldnt work? I think the laptop would survive with one less post...wouldnt it? My biggest reason for the question is that i just cant justify 300+ for a GTX on this old of a system but have seen the 7800 go vanilla on ebay considerably cheaper and its not that big of a performance hit. Ive been trying to find this out for a while and have been scouring the web and this forum particularly but havent seen anyone cover this specifically or maybe I have just missed it or am Im just missing something entirely here?

Ok cool...Theres nothing wrong with the one i have...its the 6800 ultra but just wanted to upgrade the cheapest way possible. My friend gave me his old Gen2/m170 when he got his replacement Toshiba so he could play STO. I am trying to get this one to the point that i might be able to game with him but its just been one thing after another trying to get it up and going. Its also got lines on the screen and had a dead gpu fan and the power brick died then it wouldnt power up, had to get new battery... so ive been dumping a lot more resources into this than expected BUT it was free so im not bitching....just that my wife wont let me drop any more major cash on it. Im a medical photographer in the military so i dont have much cash to work with for a photo editing/gaming rig so im TRYING to get the absolute most out of what i have or my next step is to build a m1710 out of it with what i can...if i cant get it right OR just deal with it as is and put cash toward a new one...ive had my eye on an m11x since way before they were out :P Thank you guys all the help and answering that for me its been driving me nuts trying to figure it out and if it gives this thing more time then its worth it!
