You can't. It changes name according to whatever media you have loaded.

I found a program that claims to be able to rename DVD drives, but I've never heard of it before, so use at your own risk: http://www.technize.com/rename-cddvd...ve-in-windows/

can i go into the registry somehow and change it?

Ummmmm....excuse me? Dudes....what about admin tools it's in xp even! And yeah it's just a registry thing to tell it what drive letter it should be, at least in the windows environment from what I know.

If you can find the classic control panel in windows vista/7, should be able to run the disk management service to do the same thing, can even delete partitions!! ...don't do that.

Disk Management can change the drive letter for the DVD drive but can't change the drive name. The original poster wants the drive to be identified as a DVD drive and not a Blu-Ray drive, if I understand correctly.

The registry fix is supposed to be in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE > Software > Microsoft > Windows > Current Version > Explorer > Drive Icons, however there is no Drive Icons subsection in my registry under Explorer, so either it doesn't work in Windows 7 or there's another problem. Since I couldn't find it on my computer, I didn't suggest it.

Sometimes just making the entry if it isn't there in the registry is enough.

Restore point / reg backup of course.

But for the drive letter the above works fine

That said, system restore would likely help too being a registry thing.
