emachines d620 ram upgrade, odd problem

Hello All,
I have a emachines d620 with 1gb of ram (PC2-5300, 333mhz, samsung) and I wanted to add 1gb of extra ram (PC2-6400 400mhz, kingston). When both modules are in the machine, I turn it on and a bunch of weird lines come on the screen, and windows does not boot up. Heres the kicker, both old and new ram modules work perfectly fine when they are the only modules installed, but cannot work together.

I always thought that you can mix and match ram and it would be ok? Any ideas on how i can make them work together without weird lines and not being able to boot up?

Is this Kingston module "backward" compatible with the Samsung one? Meaning that it should be able to clock down the higher speed ram to work at lower speed.

cheers ...
