Hard Drive Failure or Not?

Thread Starter
Last night my laptop shut itself off. Just before it shut itself off, I got what seemed to be the Blue Screen of Death...lines of messages that I couldn't get a chance to read cuz it was only up for a second before my screen went blank. Then, when I try to reboot the computer, I only get a blinking cursor on the screen. So I manually turn the laptop off and reboot again. This time, I get this on the screen:
Intel (R) Boot Agent Version 4.0.18
Copyright (C) 1997-2001, Intel Corporation
PXE-E61: Media test failure, check cable
PXE-MOF: Exiting Intel PXE ROM
Insert system disk in drive
Press any key when ready
So after seeing this I decided to reboot my lappy again cuz I had no idea what this meant. THis time, I get like three paragraphs telling me windows did not load properly and it asked me how I wanted to start windows. OK, looks like things are ok for now..windows loads and I get a Windows has recovered from a serious error. Went online for a few minutes, it shut itself off again...
Called Toshiba Tech Support, said it seemed like a hard drive problem. The lady told me to run the Scandisk feature for the C Drive....did it...gave me no errors?? So what's wrong??? Anyone have ideas???

Mine says same thing and I just got it. I figure it's because I don't have an O.S. installed though.

I just emailed them before I install an O.S. to be sure, and they said for me it's normal and will keep doing that until an O.S. is installed on the machine. If you already had an O.S. on yours, then I dunno. maybe you could try reinstalling it, cause all tech support will do most likely is swap your hard drive or format it and reinstall it. That's all their good for, trust me.

That error means one of two things one the hard drive is bad or two the hard drive came unpluged from the laptop. from what you said i would guss more to the side of it came unpluged due you getting a blue screen and then it not booting up. i would try to take the hard drive out and check to make sure that all the screws are in it and then reinsert it. if that dosnt work i would suggest to get a new hard drive. hope this helps Hellbringer

If your optical drive still works, you can test and diagnose your HD with Ultimate Boot CD. Google it to get the latest version, burn a CD and there you are.

Thats a giid idea but when you test the HD make sure you use ontrack disk manger. it will take like 2 hours but it is a really good test. Hellbringer

In the future, use HDtune (www.hdtune.com), it will keep you posted as to a drive going bad before it does.
