Acer Aspire AC Adaptor

I have an Acer Aspire 5335-2238 and have been having trouble with my battery. It is less than 12 months old and now only lasts for about half an hour then I have to recharge. It used to last about one and half hours until recently, then it suddenly dropped.

I recently went into a computer shop and was informed that the charger is not powerful enough, as it is the same size as the output on the computer, making it all work at its maximum, therefore is not charging the battery properly. The comp is 3.42A, and so is the charger.

Ran a battery diagnosis and it showed that its only 30% healthy.

Do I need a new battery, or first try a bigger charger? i.e. 4.74A? If so, does anyone know which acer AD adaptors are compatible with my laptop? Will the 'Universal AC Adaptor, with the correct tip, fit and work ok?

Thanks.

You can try the 4.74A, but personally I feel that your battery is failing more than the adapter. Stay away from universal adapter, my 2 cents.

OK, thanks. Think it might have to be a new battery then. Can you suggest a good reasonably priced source in Australia at all? The battery is the standard for this laptop and I would like to go a bigger battery to last a bit longer than the one to one and half hours - would you be able to suggest which might be suitable please? Then I suppose I would need a larger power supply...

I am not so keen with large battery pack unless the manufacturer states an option for the model in the configuration. Bigger battery = heavier and not always translating to (noticeable) longer working experience. Configuring different profiles when on battery and on power is the best way to extend the battery life.

Not familiar with the Australian market but do try to order an OEM replacement the best you can. When not possible then just get from sellers that have good reviews and feedbacks. Do you have access to Amazon over there?

I do have different profiles, but maybe not 'power saving' enough.
Yes, I have access to Amazon and often send to the US for goods so can look on there.

Does leaving the mains power connected when its fully charged shortened the life of the battery? Although I am pretty computer literate, I am not familiar with the whys and wherefores of batteries as have not had a problem before.

Nah - like you said - it is a myth to shorten battery life when power is on with a full battery. I leave mine in always and use it as PSU, in case the electricity goes out

I third.

By the way MichelleG, I had to chuckle at your avatar as it scrolled across the screen on the 'latest post ticker' in the upper right corner of the window.
