HDMI ports on laptops

Thread Starter
Are these HDMI ports strictly output ports or are there laptops that have HDMI ports as inputs for recording and such?
Also are there any HDMI input ExpressCard/54 for recording purposes?
Thanks
Tom

All laptop HDMI ports are output only. There are ExpressCard TV tuner cards with various different inputs. I'm not sure which ones have HDMI input, but you can look around an online store such as Newegg to see.

There's only one laptop that I know of that has HDMI input:

They're most likely the same notebook. Both Sager & Eurocom primarily sell self-branded Clevo notebooks.

It's true the Eurocom Panther 2.0 alias Clevo x7200 does have the HDMI input, However it does have some problems. First of all it causes Blue Screen crashes at boot, but on the next boot attempt the computer boots normally, and the HDMI input does work. In the Crash Dump file I identified the offending file as "tm6200.dll", which is part of the TM6200 HDMI Capture Device by YUAN High-Technology Development Co. Ltd. of Taipei, Taiwan. It comes with the Gamemate Media Player utility, which I've to play back content from my LG Blu-ray player and from my Comcast cable box. However, it won't capture content from my PS3. While doesn't permit recording, you can maximize its out to full screen and record it with Fraps (and supposedly other screen recording software, such as ZDSoft screen recorder). To avoid the Blue Screen crashes the HDMI input is currently disabled on my system. I did contact YUAN High-Tech concerning my problems, but I haven't received any replay yet. It it also possible that Eurocom is aware of these driver problems as they did not install the HDMI input driver.

Interesting.

Have you tried with different input sources, other than the PS3?

I know that AverMedia AVerTV Capture HD card uses the same TM6200 HDMI Capture technology and it works quite well on desktops - though not sure about PS3. Keep us update yould you?

That was what I thought (and got a confirmation from a colleague just now) - PS3 source is the issue for the TM6200 base devices.

I wonder if you can patch/re-route the signal from the PS3 via another device before hitting the HDMI input on the notebook.
