DV4000 won't turn on

Problem:
Hello everyone. My friend asked me to fix his hp dv4000. The original problem was that when the computer started up, posted and during windows start up, the screen would go blank and few seconds later the laptop would turn off. I was told it was a virus and since I wasn't getting paid, I tried the easiest solution, pop in a windows xp disk and tried to repair it. In the repair console it asked for administrator password and he entered the wrong password several times and then the computer just turned off and now it does not turn on at all, no light/LED or anything.

Failed Troubleshooting:
1) Unplugged battery, AC adapter, and pressed/held the power button for 30s. (when i plug in the ac adapter, the light on the adapter goes away)
2) Wiggle the AC adapter, try new adapter etc.
3) Opened it up, only thing i noticed was that there was a lot of dust in the heat sink.

So my guess is that it was overheating and that's why it was turning off during windows start up and during the repair, it overheated and melted something. the processor looks good.

Now because it turned on before he gave it to me, now at least i need the laptop to turn on so he won't think i broke it even more. Any idea on where to go from now on?

DV4000 has a bad heatsink/fan combo if I remember correctly... Dust collects between the fan and the internal fins of the heatsink and you cannot get it out without removing the whole heatsink from the fan and pulling it out...

Before you do that though, see if it starts with no hard drive and one stick of RAM...

When you cleaned it out, did you strip it down completely aand remove the heatsink and fan assembly, separating that to just the heatsink and the fan?

Let's try this one more time. Remove the battery and ac adapter. Hold down the power button for about 40secs. Connect the adapter and see if you can get any life out of it.

cheers ...

is there way to check?

Nope. Unless you have good tech tools for it. Here we do mostly by elimination process.

cheers ...
