Laptop Screen Problem - White screen and Vertical Ribbons

Thread Starter
Hi, I have an Asus a8js with a laptop screen that is bright white, when turned on, with a colorful vertical ribbon on the left and the center; both ribbons are about an inch and a half thick. Please see attachments. Does anyone know what the problem is or can anyone please refer me to any other website or repair forums? Much help would be appreciated.

I've done some research and I've narrowed it down to either a faulty inverter or a broken LCD screen. It's still a good laptop, and I want to keep it around. Each of these two parts cost about a hundred dollars so I want to make sure what the problem is before I place the order.

Thank you very much for your time.

Plug in an external monitor. If it works then the LCD is failing. Inverter would cause the LCD to go black - most if not all of the time

It works with an external monitor. Is there any other testing you would like me to do?

Thanks for your help

I would look at the cable connecting the LCD to the main board along with the inverter next.

What exactly am I looking for? At first glance, the cable looks secure and not damaged, the inverter physically looks okay too. I can buy a multimeter to run some voltage tests on the inverter also if you recommend. Please advise! It's a good laptop and would be a waste to not fix it.

I never measured an inverter so I can't help you on this, I just go with elimination process. Cable can look good but gets broken somewhere in between. Inverter is cheap to replace. These are the 2 things I would try before inspecting the motherboard where the connector is being soldered on - this is not a good sign when something happens there.

cheers ...
