xps 1710 that will not turn on, not even bios.

I left the 1710 on battery for 15 min, when i got back it was off.

When i turned it on, there was no life only the power light and the one next to it was on.

This happened once last week also, but got it to work after a while.

What ive tried,
-only on power, no battery
-Taken out battery, pushed down power button for 10+sec
-Taken out the hard drive, then power on

No luck, also the machine is set to all led lights on at startup (off with the software)

Any clue what this is?

Now the led lights wont turn on, or go to bios.

fn+powerbutton and the light with the 9 flashes, but the other two are on.

Sounded like an intermittent problem with the motherboard

You can try take things apart, clean up, new thermal paste, CMOS battery remove and reset.

Ive checked it and didn't see any loose wires etc, still the same problem.
with fn+power the light with the 9 blinks, and other two are solid.

The power brick light is on, so i dont know what happened. It was on the brick for 3 hours, then 15 min on battery and it will not start up,- strange.

Luckily have a external usb bay for 2,5" drives, so can continue my work on a small netbook..maybe backup everyday instead of 2 times a week.

What about resetting the CMOS battery?

Did that when i took off the palmrest. Didn't see anything wrong with wires etc.

Maybe a service call for the 4th time on this machine?

Why not, that's what warranty is for. Good luck.

it sounds like a motherboard problem to me, could be the Memory or CPU as well

You could try a bios recovery.
With damaged bios (even without bios chip) when you hit power button power light came on then next hdd light is on for short time then next power off.
take bios from support, extract hdr with -writehdrfile parameter write it on usb floppy (may work with usb pen drive but never tested) then power laptop with key combination to enter recovery mode.
Good luck!

Ummmm. he never flashed his bios to begin with, I've never heard of a bios randomly breaking, even then itd be a physical thing with the cmos chip and no flash can fix that. Plus every bad flash I've ever had with a laptop = 2, when I hit power, nothing happened...what so ever.

I was going to suggest fn+power, so good on u for doing that. It DOES sound like a mobo issue, but it could be anything from a short to an unlocked cpu socket for all you know.
Do the fans come on at all?
The blink code you recieved can be given to dell warranty and they'll look up what it is, also google dell blink codes. I stumbled on a site once that had the blink code translations. Just like the diagnostic mode for a car really.

That might or might not be it.

For the bios flashing thinger....just don't do it, you'll probably end up breaking it more even though the pre-boot block will reflash the card. If you really wanna though...theres a good walkthrough here.

Found this pagehttp://en.community.dell.com/support.../19271072.aspx

And the error is - CPU Error

Gave that info to dell tech on mail, and got an answer that its most likely the motherboard. So they would arrange a tech to come and fix it.

Costly for dell to send techs all the time,- 3rd time now, not counting the new dvd drive.

I have done many experiments trying to enable ahci,my bios chip is on socket, when I did a mistake on checksum of bios or when I wrong inserted bios chip into socket or when I forgot to insert bios chip that is happening, when hit power button power light is on then hdd light is on for short time then power off.

Good luck. Hopefully it is the mainboard after all. It sometimes does fail I suppose.

Could always try reseating the cpu for giggles, who knows right?

well, got a reply that dell has issued a service call for new motherboard, graphic card, heatsink and fans.

That 4 year onsite NBD service the sales person gave me for free has paid off.

But this is the last service i accept on the machine, before ill go for a refund.

Up and running again in, thanks to dell service.

So they replace the whole thing? I meant swapping out most components.

"New" motherboard, gpu, heatsink and fans.

Was looking for a new machine, but 1920x1200 seems to have been phased out for 1920x1080.

Not bad. Dell warranty and support are still top, when they put their mind into it.

Dido to that, and I've been seeing a lot of 15.1" laptops with the 1920x1080 reses.
Thats definately more crisp compared to a 17" 1920x1200 if you think about it.
I'm waiting to one day have a break into the next res up for 17".
Not like 1920 isn't enough :P its pretty awesome.
