E1705 Warranty Replacement

Thread Starter
I've had my E1705 for several years running XP Professional, and have had constant issues with heat -- I have literally gone through 5 motherboards, 7 video cards, and 2 memory replacements, all covered under my original warranty (4 year complete care). My computer recently started overheating again and appeared to be on the brink of another failure. This time when I called Dell, they offered a replacement machine, a M1730. I have liked the E1705 -- the factors that are important to me are screen resolution (WUXGA 1920x1200), decent processing/graphics to run Adobe Creative Suite, and ability to run an external monitor as an extended desktop. Here were my original specs:

The M1730 appears to be an upgrade in terms of processor and graphics card, but my biggest issues are the bulky size and weight, as I use my laptop on airplanes. It also doesn't have a VGA port, which I actually used quite a bit along with the DVI one. It also will come with Vista Ultimate, which if I am going to switch from XP, I'd rather go to Windows 7 at this point. So, I believe my choices are the following: 1) Keep the M1730. My warranty would transfer (it has 5 months left), and I would probably want to shell out an upgrade to Windows 7 instead of struggling with Vista. I'm not a gamer, are these good specs? Is this a machine I would want? 2) Try to get Dell to change the replacement to another model. I haven't kept up with all the Dell models/lines. Is there one that would offer decent resolution and graphics capabilities that wouldn't be so bulky? At a quick glance, it doesn't seem like Dell has any 17" laptops with WUXGA anymore?? 3) Keep the M1730 and sell it on Ebay, and then use that towards a brand new machine with Windows 7 and the specs I want. Any recommendations? I only found a few examples of an E1705 replacment, one being another M1730 and someone else who got a 1745. Any advice or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

First a M1730 for a E1705 is a great exchange

You will find mixed reiews on the M1730 most of which is due to the issues with the graphcs card failures.

IMO I would sell it and buy something that you would be happier with size wise.

as far as new laptops what screen size are you looking at ?

Hm. I'd just sell it on ebay once you got it. Probably could make 700-1100 on it.

ask them for a 1645. it is around the same size of the 1705, you loose a bit of resolution and screen size, but i have been pleasantly surprised. i went from a m170 (great, just overheated) to a m1710 (even nicer machine, just overheated worse)to a 1730 (which sucked ass and was broken for about 6 of the 10 months i had it) to my currant 1645, and i resisted accepting it for a long time as a replacement, but it is nice, maybe not the powerhouse the m17x i really thought i deserved, but honestly it is so much easier to carry and look at.

accepting the 1730 is going to kick you in the nuts, i swear that thing was a dog, just a constantly braking machine. if you end up having to accept it, be aware refurbished 2 year old systems will be complete junk, and if i were you i would call dell and complain about the countless blemishes and performance issues you have had right out of the box, and they might be more willing to give you what you want. with dell you never know, they could be cool, but most of the time not...

just for reference, these are pictures of a refurbished system i got, and it had only been out of production for 6 months at the time

That dust was already present when you got it?

cheers ...

I had heat I didnt like with mine until I forced fans on all the time. After that, it was comfy even on lap. No card failures.

No experience with 1730 but selling at even 500 is a BIG % of a new system

that was out of the box, wouldn't turn on at all, so i took it apart to see if something was disconnected and saw a ton of nicotine residue and gross dust. i promptly shipped it back...

Shoddy as always. Dell needs to pay more attention in quality assurance. They are not even doing it right with some new deliveries as we see in the forum.

cheers ...

yeah, that gets really annoying. i would always force my fans high with my m1710 when gaming but i used to game for 10-15 ours at a time almost daily, just too much for a laptop. i don't game more than a few hours a month now, i am sure if i used my 1645 like i used to use the other machines it would fail rather quickly because of the single fan, but i don't worry about that anymore.

i am just letting my warranty expire and running as fast as i can from dell. i have a older gateway and it is completely bullet proof. no problems at all with that laptop. ridiculous...

Fair enough but note that Gateway has had a horrible reputation over time. Kinda the "AOL" of computers. Err wait. That was PB.

Anyway, I still like the idea of evaluating the replacement unit. If ok, then keep it. If in doubt sell it cheap.

It is funny about Gateway reputation since most of the comps I have from them perform flawlessly until this day They have room to improve in the support department though.

cheers ...

To be fair, its a bit like antivirus... if you are around long enough you WILL suck on occasion.

yeah, i always thought gateway sucked ass, but i seriously have never had any issues with it, i beat on it and never maintain it and it runs like a champ. i know it will eventually will fail, i am no dummy. in the time i have had my old gateway, i have had 2 dells replaced 3 times total, so, yeah...
