Sager 2092/Compal JFL92 GPU problem

Hi

I've had my compal for 2 years now without any problems.
I turned it off yesterday, and when I woke up today the screen wont show anything. I can hear the windows login sound so I tried to connect an external screen without luck.
So I went on to conclude that the external graphics card, a 8600m GT, is the problem.

After some googling I stumbled upon the term "baking".
I found people with the same problem which had done this successfully, and now I want to try it.

All I need now is a disassembly guide. So can anyone give me a working link?

Nevermind, I found the manual.

Has anyone here done this before? What temperatures should I bake it in, and for how long?

Check out some of the threads/post in the Dell Section. Search for "bake". Good luck.

Same problem... need manual

I had the exact same thing happen to me a few days ago. Seems like these graphics cards have about 2 years in them before this issue starts to arise.

Where did you find the manual? I've not had any luck.

Xotic told me it would be $400 to replace the board, $80 for labor and I'd have to pay shipping both ways. Bum out.

Hoping the baking options works...

Thanks.

So far so good for all the members that performed it. The lasting differs from one to another. But anything that can stretch a notebook life a few more weeks or months is cool

I found the manual at www.compal.com
Go to Notebook -> BIOS & Drivers -> JFL92 -> Service manual

Im gonna try sending it in as I still have two months left of my warranty.
Hopefully they wont notice I've been opening the case.

Success!

Happy to report that it worked!

I followed some steps outlined in another forum. Basically cooked it upside-down for 10 minutes @ 375, turning the oven off at 5 minutes, leaving it in for the other 5, then letting it cool in the oven w/ the door open for ~30.

1 hour later I popped it in and reassembled. Back to working order and using it for this post.

Zing!
