the 3d Mark for the 8600 was 2640, my 9100 gives 3358.

The biggest difference is with flight sim 2004, with all setting on maximum at 1024 x 768 the 8600 topped out at around 30fps and sometimes dropped to 15fps, which is still playable and pretty good... heck, I was impressed at the time, but the 9100 at the same settings gives me over 70 fps and never drops below 35 fps, much much better!
The 9100 has a Pentium 4 with Hyper Threading which is way faster than the 8600. And it has faster RAM. That, combined with the better cooling you are able to get with the larger case will account for alot of your performance increases. The 9700 is a better card, but from what I've read on this forum and others, it's not significantly better. But combine it with all the other goodies in the 9100 and you'll get far better performance.

I forgot to mention the processor and memory as big contributers to performance in my previous post. NOt sure what happened, there, I must have been drinking something... haha

If I had the money I would have bought an 8600 and a 9100, I was really impressed with the battery life on the 8600, (I watched ROTK The two towers) all the way through on a single charge and I like the appearance, but since I could only get one, and mobility is not an issue for me, it was the 9100. The super double ram deal helped..
