XPS m1530 Webcam Issues

Problem: Webcams just DONT work on this computer anymore. The internal webcam stopped working, then i tried an external, and it didnt work, and i JUST bought a new external webcam which is windows 7 compatible and still no luck.

Background: Bought my XPS m1530 with Vista 32-bit almost 2 years ago and upgraded to windows 7 64-bit when it came out. My internal webcam has not worked since. When i look at the hardware details, it says everything is working ok, both for internal and external webcams, but the video just doesnt show. The microphone on the labtop works, and i THINK the microphone for the external webcam works so i think the products do work. I feel its a driver issue, but i have installed so many drivers and applications and nothing seems to work. I dont see anyone else with this problem online.

I have contacted both dell and HP (external webcam), and dell points their fingers and HP and also says warenty void for changing OS, and HP says its computers fault (and i do think it is computers fault), but none of them are really helping me solve the problem.

Can anyone help me? Is there a way to run a diagnostic on the computer?

1. This external webcam, is it an USB device?

2. Got driver for 64-bit?

3. If yes, have you tried with different ports?

4. Also, Windows 7 compatible is not always Windows 7 capable

5. Video does not show: have you tried with an IM app (Skype per example) and see if Skype recognizes the cam's presence?

1. The external webcam is USB (HP KQ245AA Premium Autofocus Webcam)

2. I believe I have the 64 bit drivers for the computer, and the internal webcam. Not sure if i have them for the external one. Is there a way to diagnose if i am running the correct drivers?

3. With my external i have tried 2 different ports, ill try some more. But with my internal, there is no luck at all.

4. that sux.....

5. I have tried Skype and it tells me there is an "unknown error" for both internal and external webcams. When i tried the programs that came with the external webcam, it tell me the product is not plugged in or is in use by another program... do you think a virus is using my webcam to chat with his virus friends???

Thanx for the fast reply and all your help

Nah, your problem seems to be with drivers more than virus issue.

For the internal I recommend that you search for "Creative Labs Laptop Integrated Webcam" windows 7 64-bit driver and install it, if you can find it, or try this one for Vista 64-bits

HP cam - hit and miss always with Windows 7 64-bits

Yea, when I go to the control panel and look at my hardware, and double click on the Internal Webcam, I get this message ""You need a WIA driver to use this device. Please install it from the installation CD or manufacturer's website and try again"". I just went to Dell's website and reinstalled some drivers and some more, but still have the issue. Any idea what this WIA driver is? I googled it, but cant find anything specific to my product.

I would try at this stage re-installing a clean Vista 64-bits first and then perform an upgrade to Windows 7 64-bits.
