Is it possible for a laptop to do all of this stuff and stay alive for 4 to 6 years?
Several years ago, I was told that you don't want to leave your laptop on all day long just to record TV shows because the heat will kill your processor.
I need a new computer system and want to record TV shows to ditch my cable DVR and assumed that I should get a desktop that can stay on all day/night. To my surprise, a friend who works in IT said that laptops are able to stay on all the time and mentioned that many hospitals are purchasing laptops that stay on all the time.
Can that be true?
Would it be wise to buy a laptop and leave it on most of the time to record TV shows?

In addition, the main reason I need a new computer is that I am buying Adobe's Creative Suite 5: Master Collection which lists some demanding specs that I'll list below. I haven't seen any laptops that have sound cards to go with the software that can manipulate audio files.

Windows:

The bottom line is that I only get 1 license so this computer I buy has to last. I figured if I was going to get such a system, it would be nice if it also let me output tv programs/movies/mp3s to my TV and stereo.
Where do I start? I can't even decide if I should go with a laptop or a desktop. If anyone can help me get started, I would really appreciate it!
Thanks in advance,
Mary
