Purchasing a very powerful laptop!!

Hi.

I intended to purchase a Toshiba Qosmio but I have seen a very bad review about it here: http://thesunstroke.blogspot.com/

There is an alternative for it?

That had nothing whatsoever to do with the quality or usability of the computer - it just said that the recovery partition resets the hard drive to factory settings and wipes all data on the drive, which all recovery partitions are designed to do. If Toshiba didn't include a warning, then that's a legit complaint, but it still doesn't have anything to do with the computer in any other aspect.

What did you want to do with the computer? How do you plan to use it?

Sorry.
I posted the link to the main page of the blog, where the main article WAS. Now it seems they added a new article. So the original article about Toshiba Qosmio is here: http://thesunstroke.blogspot.com/201...-hands-on.html

The review says that the computer is average. Not bad, not bright, just average.

I will use the computer for general stuff - web editing, some programming, multimedia, etc. Not much gaming.

I would stop using that "review" as the basis for anything...

Then what review do you recommend? The one from PC Magazine or other magazines that write an amazing review and few pages down they put an ad to the product? Obviously they are paid to write good reviews!

That review is well done and complete.

What is important to you in a computer? What size screen do you want? Is battery life important? What about build quality? Looks? Weight? What's your price range?

It isnt anything more than an opinion writeup but some of the comparisons are weak or so agenda driven that they make no sense. Those scores are compared to what? Average to what? Desktops? Why did he buy this thing in the first place?

Comparing to desktops is a waste of time and I dont find Acrobat Reader or MSOffice "crapware". Granted there ARE faster solutions for reading PDF's but its an industry standard that many end up installing anyway. Ditto for office... really helps me when purchasing licenses but not having to wait for installation.

If decisions are based on that review I would have to say "do not buy it!" He seems to regret doing so but since you WANT one anyway then why keep using it as a reference? The recovery software comments were kinda funny too. If this guy had done the research you are now I doubt he would have spent the $...

Review based on regret is just as bad as a fanboy review IMO. Its ok to use them so long as you know it in advance.

Edit: I take it all back. Review written by a "Guru"

Well, I agree with you EXCEPT the above part. I also hate when other installs "Free" software in my computer, software that later turns out to be useless or software for which I actually have to pay.

Acrobat Reader is a like a big bubble of gas that is doing nothing than wasting space and being slow. I hate it. So, what's the point in having it install it in your computer by other just to waste time to uninstall it, clean the registry (if you don't know yet Acrobat uninstaller does not clean everything) and then install a better software.

The same for MS Office. Why purchase a new copy of MS Office Student edition when I have my old full copy?

_______

Anyway, I have found some useful things such as the size of the charger. I will consider this when I will buy my laptop.

I used Foxit Reader for a long time but reverted back to Acrobat Reader since their V9 version. Though Adobe does take a bit more disk space, its performance has greatly improved.

cheers ...

Disk space is not a problem! Loading time..... YES!!
I haven't tried Acrobat in years. If you say it is faster now, maybe I will try it. I really really hope they also give up on those useless services they were running in the background.

Many thanks.

I totally agree with the "old" Adobe loading time. It was a nightmare. There are only 2 things that they tag on the background: ARm and launcher, I disable both of them, no lag in performance. And they work well with all browsers that I use.

cheers ...

Not every laptop purchased is used in the same way. I've had to purchase 7 laptops in a short period of time... just key in the lice# for office and its done. Saves me a ton of time as does not having to remove then install alternate applications.

As for adobe AR I too used to remove for my personal system but THIS time I did not. It opens fine for me, no lag.

Because at the end of the day most users do not agree with you. MOST users dont know what alternate applications to use or the safe sites to get them from. Love it or hate it, adobe is the "standard" for PDFs.

OEM Offiice is (in my market) WAY cheaper and as such you are far more likely to buy it than retail. Exceptions to that? Sure, but the majority find this easier and it roughly matches life cycles.

PC's fully clean of all applications, add-ons, or other bits is likely to cost MORE for the same hardware. Gotta pick your battles!
