Processor upgrade xpx 1710

Thread Starter
I have Dell xps 1710.

Intel T2600 2.16 GHz

2 Gig Ram

7900 GtX Geforce

Some games stutter at times.

I was thinking changing my processor.

What would you recommend? Maybe t9600 but expensive.

Would new processor make a differnece in gaming proformance?

Are the processors easy change?

Thanks

I think the T7600G is the fastest your laptop will support (BIOS)

upgrading the CPU will help, and so will going to 4 GB of memory.

The T7600G in your laptop also supports CPU over clocking in the BIOS menu.

but honestly I would be careful how much money you would spend on a laptop of this age.

4Gb of memory, and a T7200, T7400 or even the locked T7600 CPU would give you a boost in performance. but you still may have problems with newer games.

It maybe better to consider selling what you have and get a newer faster laptop, if you can.

Last changing the CPU and not too bad, of course you will be opening up the laptop You will find guides here in the Dell forum, as well Dell has complete service manuals available on their site for all laptops at no cost.

T7200, max ram and a faster drive that are what I would do for this model, just to stretch it a bit longer.

Thanks for replies

Think i will go for ebay.. CORE 2 DUO CPU 2.0GHz T7200 Tested Working SL9SF

I wonder will there be any heat issues?

My hard drive 100 gb 7200 rpm

Also I will change ram memory to max ram 4 Gigs soon.

this option will be fine for me it will not cost too much

Thanks

Not so much more heating up than your current CPU. Make sure a good new thermal paste is being used. Have fun.

I checked prices ebay.... T7700 2.40Ghz/4M/800 appears faster benchmark
and is lower price than the T7600 2 DUO CPU 2.33GHz

Will the T7700 2.40Ghz be ok with my xps 1710?

I doubt that the T7700 would (physically) fit in your notebook.

Maybe i will take your advice qhn

T7200 and max ram

I doubt if faster processors will make much difference.

The t7200 2.00 ghz is good price now anything faster would be too costly.

t76000 ghz 2.33 i am not sure pricey but good benchmark.

The problem with bottleneck and stutters i think is my old gtx 7900 gpu

Thanks

Go for the T7200 and 4 GB of memory

That's about the best increase for the money.

Sorry but I disagree with the course suggested - your spec's are identical to my old 9400 (modded to fit 7950GTX).

There are only 2 recommendation's I would make.
1> increase the ram to 4gig - the 2 gig chips are cheap
2> buy a more modern laptop

Your proposal to go for a T7200 clocked & 2gig over the older 2.16 gig makes no sense. Yes the Memon is a better design and yes it will support 64bit OS but you will not see an improvement of sufficient value for the money paid. The other issue you have with the XPS1710 is the motherboard will not support more than 4gig - so even going to a 64bit OS will gain very little.

For gaming the CPU is not normally the bottleneck, this is mainly due to the video card, your already using the 7900GTX which is a good card if kept cool.

The suggestion to check your system makes a lot of sense - I would also recommend reformatting to make is as clean as possible.

The other recommendation would be to save some $$$ for a new system, yours was purchased around 2006 which makes it 4 years old now and well that is the problem.

Dell Precision M6400 Laptop 320Gb HD/ATI FirePro M7740
Item condition: Seller refurbished

He would accept $1300

That is not bad of a price for a solid business model notebook, especially with the special tweaked and souped up ATI HD 4860 card

Do you think it is a good gaming machine....grand theft auto 4 and crysis?

2.8Ghz Core 2 Duo (T9600) Processor
ATI FirePro M7740 1Gb Graphics Card

I think above specs would much better performance than my xps 1710 gtx7900 and t2600 2.16Ghz

Maybe I sell my machine . not sure what i get
post #17 of 19
You should not have any issues with gaming with ATI FirePro M7740 card. It belongs to first class card classification And that T9600 CPU is not bad at all.

Games in general are only good if they can work with the hardware (not the other way around - my personal take)

To be honest, for this Business Model I would rather go with a Quad Core and an nVidia Quadro FX GPU. Anything outside this realm hurts the image and performance of this Dell Model. Look around some more for an M6400 with Quad and nVidia combination. And you might get it for around 1300-1400!

My 2c - M6400 brilliant unit, mine also has a T9600 8gig ram with 1TB HDD (raid 0) & FX 3700. Yes Crysis runs fine at high settings full res (my display is 1900x1200).

M6400 is solid as a rock max temp I have hit is around 70Deg C - in Ausi in summer (playing modern warfare 2 at Christmas with 3 mates & 2 bottles of bourbon) anyway Sydney temp was around 38 Deg C. M6400 is easy to upgrade, 4 ram slots make going to 8 gig cheap, not as quick as say alienware M17x but solid.
